Phillies Face Roster Overhaul, Braves & Dodgers Prepare for NLDS

Since their 2022 World Series appearance, the Phillies have shown a steady regression in postseason performance, failing to advance past the wild card round in 2025 after a disappointing season.

A significant portion of the team's core, including key players like Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, J.T. Realmuto, Kyle Schwarber, Aaron Nola, and Zack Wheeler, are 33 years or older.

Ken Rosenthal argues for a "drastic" approach to inject more athleticism and youth into the roster, suggesting that incremental changes will not be sufficient to reverse the team's trajectory.

The New York Mets serve as a cautionary example of the risks associated with roster turnover, particularly after their decision to part ways with Pete Alonso.

In demanding East Coast markets like Philadelphia, players such as Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, who have proven their ability to thrive under pressure, are considered essential for team success, making their departure a reluctant consideration for management.

Dave Dombrowski faces the intricate challenge of improving the team's poor defense and inconsistent offense while carefully balancing the need for veteran leadership and the integration of new talent.

Dave Dombrowski has a proven track record of successfully transitioning star players to new positions, notably with Bryce Harper, which suggests a similar strategic move for Turner could be effectively managed.

The Phillies, like many teams across the league, continue to face challenges in establishing a consistently reliable bullpen, highlighting the inherent volatility and year-to-year unpredictability of relief pitcher performance.

Since December 2020, only two players drafted beyond the first round have reached the major league roster, supporting Ken Rosenthal’s assessment that the franchise ranks among the bottom five minor league organizations.

Since Dave Dombrowski assumed control in December 2020, only two players drafted beyond the first round, Orion Kerkering and Alex McFarland, have successfully made it to the major league roster.

The scarcity of prospects, compounded by injuries to key talents like Aiden Miller, further highlights the systemic issues within the Phillies' farm system.

Despite concerns about the Braves' starting pitching depth, the team effectively patched its rotation through key contributions from Martin Perez and Tyler Mahle.

Tyler Mahle has emerged as the most impactful starting pitcher acquired since the trade deadline, providing much-needed stability to the rotation.

Ken Rosenthal questioned the Braves' decision to deploy Chris Sale out of the bullpen on short rest, noting Sale's infrequent pitching on regular four-day rest throughout the season, having done so only twice.

Sale's advanced age of 37 and extensive injury history raise significant concerns about the potential for further strain and the effectiveness of his usage in high-leverage situations.

The Los Angeles Dodgers met their benchmark of 100 wins, although some observers felt they underperformed compared to preseason predictions that had them projected for 120 victories.

The team's pitching rotation and bullpen are currently in excellent condition, provided Yoshinobu Yamamoto maintains his health, offering a strong foundation for the postseason.

Key players like Mookie Betts have shown recent improvements, solidifying the team's status as a favorite despite the inherent unpredictability of playoff baseball, positioning them well for potential matchups against formidable pitchers like Chris Sale and Tyler Mahle.

The Dodgers' bullpen strategy benefits from not having a designated closer, which allows the coaching staff to make matchup-based decisions for high-leverage innings, whether in the seventh or ninth.

Potential candidates for critical relief roles include Sasaki, Tanner Scott, and Edwin Diaz, providing a range of options for manager Dave Roberts.

The collaborative approach between the front office and coaching staff in managing the pitching staff has been particularly effective, fostering a cohesive strategy.

There is an understanding that Yoshinobu Yamamoto will not be utilized out of the bullpen on zero days' rest, unlike a previous instance in 2025, reflecting a more cautious approach to player management.

The Dodgers are managing Shohei Ohtani's physical condition on a day-to-day basis, closely monitoring his recovery and how he feels after each game.

Ohtani appears to be in better physical shape now compared to when he was placed on the injured list, benefiting from a first-round bye that provided additional recovery time.

The postseason schedule's built-in off days are expected to further aid Ohtani's recovery and ensure his availability.

Calf injuries are known for being particularly difficult to manage and often require more recovery time than initially anticipated, making Aaron Judge's status highly uncertain.

There is significant concern among experts regarding the high risk of reinjury if Judge attempts to play before achieving full health.

Even if Judge were to play as a designated hitter, he would still need to run, which could exacerbate his calf injury.

Rosenthal suggested that it might be more prudent for the Yankees to hold Judge out for a later series to prevent a setback that could sideline him for an extended period, noting that his mere presence or intimidation factor is not sufficient without full health.

Some commentators argue that Judge's mere presence in the batter's box provides an intimidation factor to opposing pitchers, regardless of his running ability.

Ken Rosenthal highlighted reports from Joel Sherman and John Heyman, both emphasizing that calf injuries typically demand extensive recovery time, underscoring the potential risk of playing Judge prematurely.

Calf injuries are notoriously tricky and present a significant strategic liability for baseball teams.

The risk of reinjury substantially outweighs any potential short-term benefits that a compromised player might offer.

For a player like Aaron Judge, full health is a prerequisite for viable roster inclusion; otherwise, the team risks him suffering a setback that could sideline him for the entire postseason.

Fans are advised to bring umbrellas for the Fox broadcast of the NLDS between the Braves and the Dodgers, with temperatures at first pitch projected to reach 100 degrees.
