Iran's Hormuz Demands Pressure US, Israel

The United States approved visas for Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to attend the UN General Assembly despite ongoing hostilities between the two nations. Strict travel restrictions have been imposed on the Iranian delegation during their visit to New York, limiting their movements within the city.

This annual UN gathering in New York City is viewed as a potential, albeit fragile, setting for diplomatic engagement, offering an opportunity for indirect discussions on de-escalation.

Israel is facing a national election on October 27th, adding domestic political stakes to its foreign policy positions regarding Iran. Israel has consistently argued that any arrangement with Iran must address its nuclear program and wider security threats, not simply the restoration of shipping through Hormuz.

Israeli officials fear that a deal focused solely on maritime issues could create a rift with Washington and provide economic relief to Iran without addressing its military capabilities or regional influence.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf issued a stern warning, stating that any future attack against Iran's interests and security would receive a "faster, heavier, and more painful response." This declaration underscores Iran's intent to demonstrate that economic pressure will not force it to make concessions.

Tehran aims to project an image of strength and resolve, deterring further aggression through the threat of escalated retaliatory actions.

These higher transportation costs are subsequently feeding into various sectors, impacting food prices, manufacturing, construction, and retail supply chains globally.

In an attempt to mitigate reliance on maritime routes, Iran is exploring less efficient and more costly land routes through Turkey. Additionally, the increased geopolitical risk in the region has led to higher insurance costs for vessels, further burdening global shipping and trade.

Negotiations regarding the Strait of Hormuz are seeking an arrangement that allows normal commercial navigation to resume without either Washington or Iran feeling that they have surrendered their main source of leverage. Iran is demanding sanction relief and recognition of its significant role in the strait's security, viewing these as essential components of any resolution.

Conversely, Washington insists on absolute freedom of navigation through the waterway and a definitive end to threats against international shipping. Both sides continue to vie for influence, as neither has achieved full control over the strategic waterway, leading to a prolonged state of tension.

For Tehran, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is not an isolated decision concerning shipping but rather a component of a much larger negotiation. This includes disputes over sanctions, military deployments, frozen assets, compensation claims, and questions of regional sovereignty.
