Animator Dong Chang Details 'NegaPosi Angler' Process

He provided project files for viewers to follow along and recreate the animation.

Chang’s demonstration focused on a specific short segment, highlighting the technical and creative decisions involved in bringing the scene to life.

Before animating, Chang explained how he analyzes storyboards to understand the context of the scene, which features the main character, Chihiro, quitting his job while friends celebrate. Character Kou enters the scene, feigning anger, and walks towards the camera.

Chang underscored the value of acting out scenes physically before drawing, a skill he learned during his undergraduate studies, to better capture character emotions and movements.

Chang used Clip Studio Paint for the animation, noting its robust features for digital artists. To streamline the layout process, he utilized a pre-existing 3D model of the room where the scene occurs.

This 3D model served as a background reference, significantly reducing the time needed for initial setup and allowing him to focus on character animation, with the background to be painted over later.

Chang began by roughing out Kou's starting pose, showing her facing screen left with a pouting expression. He outlined his shorthand method for head construction, which involves sketching a skull shape, defining the jawline, and accurately placing the eyes.

He stressed the critical importance of studying design documents before drawing to ensure that the animated characters closely match the established designs, maintaining consistency across the production.

As Kou walks towards the camera, her size increases within the frame to simulate perspective, illustrating her approach. Her expression is animated to appear sarcastically sad or teasing, reflecting her feigned anger.

Chang incorporated physical movements such as tilting her face up and swinging her shoulders to convey her dynamic and somewhat dramatic entrance.

Chang used the onion skin tool to accurately match and connect key poses, ensuring smooth transitions between frames. He explained that this tool is essential for visualizing previous and subsequent frames, allowing for precise adjustments.

Anticipation was created by having Kou tilt her head down as she turned it around, incorporating squash-and-stretch principles to emphasize movement. This technique adds a dynamic quality, making the motion appear more natural and fluid.

He prioritized the main body movement first, planning to add secondary actions like hair movement later. This sequential approach ensures that the core animation is solid before adding finer details.

The meticulous connection of poses with anticipation, supported by the onion skin tool, is fundamental to achieving believable and engaging character animation.

To refine character hair movement, Chang used an orange color to mark areas that should be beneath the hair layer, ensuring visual consistency. He detailed the process of making sure hair fans out realistically according to the character's motion.

This technique helps maintain consistent hair patterns throughout the scene, contributing to the overall fluid and natural appearance of the animation.

Chang demonstrated how he creates shading reference drawings for the production team, typically for one or two frames in a scene. He uses red lines to indicate highlights and blue lines for shadows.

These references are crucial for guiding in-betweeners and directors, ensuring consistent lighting and shading throughout the animation pipeline and improving overall readability.

To enhance visual clarity, especially in complex scenes, Chang mentioned that some digital animators fill characters with a light yellow color. This technique makes the characters stand out, improving their readability against backgrounds.

He also checks for transparency by turning off background and paper layers, which further helps the character to pop, particularly during intricate camera movements.

These methods involve adjusting the background camera work independently from the animation layer.

This independent movement creates a crucial separation between the background and the character, enhancing the sense of depth and realism. He utilized Clip Studio Paint's keyframe features to precisely manage scene framing and camera movements.

The careful synchronization of camera work with character animation ensures that the entire scene maintains a dynamic and immersive feel.

He explained that animators need to specify how in-betweeners should draw the mouth for each sound.

He referenced Japanese animation terminology, such as 'naguchi' (half-open) for sounds like 'tsu' in 'Tsunhiro' and 'akiguchi' (full-open) for other sounds, defining these shapes in the action column.

He noted that by slightly varying the posing and ensuring the movement, such as Kou's left-to-right swing as she walks, remains lifelike, a potentially boring scene transforms into something more engaging.

These subtle differences are crucial for director review, as they prevent the animation from appearing stagnant and add an extra layer of visual interest.
