Global Trade Returns to Fragmented Spice Routes

Before roughly 1400-1500, global trade was primarily conducted via land or coastal shipping, leading to a world divided into dozens of small regional microeconomies rather than a unified global system. Supply chains for goods reaching Western Europe were extensive, relying on hundreds of intermediaries to transport products across vast distances. This fragmented structure meant that goods traveled through numerous hands before reaching their final destinations.

Venice, Genoa, Pisa, and Amalfi emerged as dominant entry points for Eastern goods into Western Europe, capitalizing on their strategic coastal locations. Goods from East and Southeast Asia would travel through the Ottoman Empire to Istanbul, which then served as a critical shipping hub for coastal trade into the Mediterranean. These Italian cities became the final gateways, accumulating substantial wealth by controlling the flow of exotic products into the European market.

Portugal, a relatively poorer European country located at the western end of the Iberian Peninsula, pioneered deep-water navigation, enabling ships to sail out of sight of land. This innovation allowed explorers like Vasco da Gama to circumnavigate Africa and establish direct access to India. By creating these direct maritime routes, Portugal effectively cut out the numerous middlemen and the Italian city-states' traditional monopoly on the spice trade, fundamentally disrupting the existing global commerce structure.

The fundamental technologies underpinning modern globalization are deteriorating, leading to a breakdown of the system that allowed worldwide access to any product. This current environment means that no single country possesses the capability to unilaterally protect global sea lanes, a stark contrast to previous eras. The future of trade is therefore anticipated to be much more regionalized or even localized, necessitating a significant militarization of these emerging trade routes to ensure security and flow.

The most significant impact of current global shifts will likely be a collapse in trade involving manufactured goods, which presently require products to cross borders thousands of times through multiple supply chain steps. This intricate global model is unsustainable, meaning that future products will need to be produced either relatively locally or within contained regional networks, such as the European Union. Items that cannot adhere to this localized production model simply will not be manufactured, signaling a retreat from global interdependency towards pre-modern trade patterns.
