Labour Challenged Over Charities Aiding Migrants

The Labour Party's reliance on union funding, totaling £150 million since 2010, has been highlighted, with claims that these contributions heavily influence policy. This situation intensified after Nigel Farage threatened to block union funding if Reform UK's donations faced restrictions.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds rejected the notion of a 'two-tier' donation system, asserting that the discussion is not about any specific political party but about the principle of contributions to UK politics. He emphasized that current regulations cap donations from British citizens residing overseas at £100,000, with new rules taking effect on March 25th of this year. These regulations legally require political donors to be either UK citizens or registered companies.

He characterized union contributions as typical of ordinary working-class British people, whereas he believes Reform UK's funding sources represent an unprecedented scale of high-net-worth individual donations. He further contended that such donations to Labour or the Conservatives also differ significantly from Reform's specific financial situation.

Reports have emerged alleging the involvement of charity workers in France in facilitating illegal migrant crossings into Britain. The interviewer presented recorded evidence suggesting that these workers are aiding and abetting the crisis. Additionally, leaflets allegedly providing asylum advice to illegal migrants on how to claim asylum and bypass UK rules have reportedly been distributed, alongside claims of inactivity by the French Gendarmerie at the coast.

Jonathan Reynolds stated that the government has made significant progress in managing the migration backlog and related issues. He reported that the inherited asylum backlog has been reduced by over half, specifically by 60%. Furthermore, he highlighted that deportation levels are at record highs, and the government remains committed to closing down hotels previously utilized for asylum seekers.
