Rayner Attacks Farage Over Reform UK Donations

Angela Rayner shared her personal history, beginning her working life as a home carer on casual hours. She credited her former union, Unison, with significantly improving her life, as well as the lives of her family and fellow workers whom she later represented. Rayner emphasized the broad impact of unions, noting their role in securing fundamental worker rights such as weekends, paid holidays, and even modern schemes like the furlough program.

Rayner highlighted the deep-rooted partnership between the Labour Party and the trade union movement. She stated that the Labour Party was not merely an offshoot of the trade union movement but grew up alongside it, sharing histories and futures. This shared journey signifies a commitment to confronting future challenges as a unified front, reinforcing their long-standing alliance.

She acknowledged that many had deemed this task impossible. Rayner credited the collaboration of union members present at the congress for helping to achieve this legislative milestone. The bill's passage underscored the government's commitment to strengthening worker protections.

New rights for working people were created, not just individually but collectively through their trade unions. These legislative advancements include statutory sick pay from day one, ensuring workers receive pay immediately when ill. Additionally, new rights for paternity and parental leave were established, offering greater support for families. The changes also simplified statutory recognition for unions, strengthening their ability to represent workers, and provided real protection against unfair dismissal and sexual harassment, alongside the establishment of a new Fair Work Agency.

Angela Rayner directly criticized Reform UK, asserting that the party is not on the side of working people. She claimed that Reform UK voted against the Employment Rights Act. Furthermore, Rayner alleged that if elected, Reform UK would repeal both the Employment Rights Act and the Equalities Act in short order, indicating a fundamental opposition to current labor protections.

She emphasized the severe impact of such practices on millions of workers, underscoring that these are not merely economic issues but deeply affect people's lives and the lives of union members. Her remarks highlighted the precariousness these practices introduce into the workforce.

Angela Rayner launched an attack on Reform UK's funding sources, particularly those linked to cryptocurrency. She stated that while Nigel Farage's backers may have made their money in crypto, their motives are clear and not 'cryptic.' Rayner asserted that these donors understand a Reform government would act in their specific interests rather than the broader public interest, implying a transactional relationship aimed at securing policies like deregulation and reduced worker rights.

Rayner sharply contrasted the funding mechanisms of trade unions with political donations from wealthy individuals, specifically crypto billionaires. She defended union member subscriptions as the most highly regulated form of political funding available, highlighting their transparency. Conversely, Rayner accused offshore billionaires of attempting to 'buy our democracy' through less transparent means, suggesting a fundamental difference in their intentions and the integrity of their contributions.

Angela Rayner highlighted the Labour government's early achievements, emphasizing their commitment to working people. She reported a reduction of 400,000 people on NHS waiting lists, demonstrating progress in healthcare. Additionally, 2,000 more GPs have been introduced, enhancing primary care access. Rayner also noted the return of buses and rail services to public ownership and control, signifying a shift toward public rather than private management of essential services.

Rayner outlined the government's firm rejection of decades of neoliberal policies, de-industrialization, deregulation, privatization, and austerity. She criticized trickle-down economics as a failed approach that has eroded public faith. Rayner held previous administrations responsible for the loss of public trust resulting from these policies, signaling a commitment to reverse these trends and rebuild the economy on different principles.

Key initiatives include implementing bus fare caps and cuts to energy bills to alleviate financial burdens on households. New rights for renters and leaseholders are planned, alongside a rising national minimum wage to ensure fair compensation. The government also intends to fully implement its plan to 'make work pay,' specifically by banning exploitative zero-hour contracts and embarking on a council housing revolution.
