Apple Watch Series 12 Faces Privacy Concerns

Amidst the hype of Techtober and the iPhone launch, Apple announced the Series 12 and Ultra 4, models Marques Brownlee described as having mostly minor updates.

The release occurred amidst major tech events like the iPhone launch, which overshadowed the watch announcements due to the broader 'Techtober hype'.

Apple redesigned its sensor array with more efficient LEDs and photodiodes, now sampling heart rate every 5 seconds instead of every 5 minutes, and released a study claiming superior heart rate sensing accuracy.

The updated Apple Health app now offers users a sleep score and a readiness score, providing insights into how well rested they are and their body's preparedness for the day ahead, akin to Whoop's recovery score.

A new 'Longevity' section helps users track their health age, mirroring Whoop's health span tracking, while a 'Metabolic Health' section enables the uploading of blood test results for deeper health insights.

These AI-powered features aim to provide actionable health advice, directly challenging the analytical metrics offered by leading screenless fitness trackers.

'Live Rewind' allows users to double-tap the digital crown to transcribe the last 15 seconds of audio, effectively creating a constant listening device.

Critics find these use cases contrived and warn of significant privacy concerns, suggesting the features could solidify the Apple Watch's reputation as a device that is constantly listening.

Apple asserts on its website that audio for these features is neither recorded nor stored long-term, and access to this audio data is restricted, with individual speakers not identified in the recaps.

The company also emphasizes that syncing of this data uses end-to-end encryption to protect user privacy and prevent unauthorized access.

The S11 chip features a specialized component called the Secure Exclave, an isolated section where raw audio is constantly processed and overwritten, ensuring it remains within a protected environment.

Song identification works similarly to Shazam, matching audio shapes to recognize music, while Live Rewind allows users to manually capture the preceding 15 seconds of audio by double-tapping the digital crown.

It will be challenging for Apple to explain to the public that the Apple Watch is both taking notes on what users say all day and simultaneously not recording all the time.

The author argues that despite technical nuances and encryption, the device effectively records continuously, making it difficult to convey this distinction to general consumers.

The Siri Recap feature, which generates summaries of meetings and conversations, raises significant privacy risks for third parties who are involved but have not consented to having their conversations captured and summarized.

This feature captures and processes discussions involving other people who are not explicitly opting in, creating a situation where their privacy is potentially compromised.

Apple is launching this feature in beta, which signals a cautious approach to what is described as 'sketchy territory' due to these inherent ethical dilemmas.

Apple is directly targeting the burgeoning physical AI companion market, which includes devices like WHOOP and other screenless fitness trackers.

This strategy places Apple in direct competition with emerging AI companions, especially as companies like OpenAI are reportedly developing their own hardware in partnership with figures like Jony Ive.

Apple aims to leverage its extensive existing user base to maintain its market dominance, with the core question being whether the company can persuade users to transition from the iPhone to new AI-centric devices.

The Apple Watch Series 12's ability to listen to its surroundings all day for summaries crosses a privacy line because it extends into public spaces where other people are present.

Unlike smart speakers designed for home use, the watch operates in environments with many unconsenting individuals, and it lacks physical indicators, such as those found on Meta glasses, to alert others when it is recording.

While Apple claims to avoid speaker attribution and filter out sensitive audio, and the watch plays an audible chime for 'Live Rewind', it does not do so for the constant recap feature.

Apple emphasizes that raw recordings are never processed by the company, but privacy remains a complex issue when it impacts individuals who have not consented to being recorded in public settings.

There are rumors that future AirPods could include camera sensors, potentially ushering in ambient visual intelligence, suggesting a broader strategic move into continuous ambient data capture beyond audio.

Other major technology companies like OpenAI, Google, and Amazon are also expected to push the boundaries of privacy with their own AI-driven devices.

The public's reaction to the launch of these new features will play a critical role in determining the future trajectory and acceptance of such pervasive AI technologies.
