The Supreme Court Chief Justice is embroiled in controversy over judicial appointments and an alleged high-cost lunch, leading to calls for impeachment and a potential graft investigation.
Following the Chuseok break, Lee Bong-woo from the media human rights research institute 'Muncle', Kwak Su-san, and Jang Seul-gi from 'Media Today' joined the program 'Five O'Clock, This is Lee Jae-seok' to systematically review daily news.
Panelists Lee Bong-woo from the media human rights research institute 'Muncle', Kwak Su-san, and Jang Seul-gi from 'Media Today' joined the broadcast to systematically review the day's news.
Lee Bong-woo mentioned that his family typically stays home during holidays, allowing him to rest and eat, although he only drank alcohol on one day.
Kwak Su-san reported gaining 4 kilograms after spending the holiday in Gwangju and Gokseong, with the team noting their return after a ten-day hiatus from the regular broadcast schedule.
Chief Justice Cho signaled his intent to address the recent judicial appointment rejection during the audit, hinting at delivering only an opening statement and delegating further questioning to the Minister of National Court Administration.
Observers anticipate that the Chief Justice may only provide an opening statement and delegate questioning to the Minister of National Court Administration, limiting direct engagement on contentious issues.
Supreme Council member Kim Min-seok stated that the Democratic Party must uphold public sentiment regarding judicial constitutional violations as a fundamental aspect of Korean democracy.
Lawmaker Seo Young-kyo cited the 2023 remand case, inner-party interference allegations, and recent judicial appointment failures as grounds for impeachment.
Debate continues within the party on whether impeachment is a politically strategic move or if it risks elevating the Chief Justice's profile.
Critics argue that efforts to impeach administration-aligned officials frequently backfire, inadvertently boosting their political careers by drawing public attention to their cause.
New allegations suggest that Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae disregarded advice from the National Court Administration to accept a reappointment.
Jang Seul-gi stated that Cho reportedly ordered a revision to the report and unilaterally authored the official statement released on September 22, rather than consulting with the National Court Administration.
The original rejection document, issued without necessary ministerial signatures, was subsequently withdrawn due to these procedural irregularities.
The situation raises questions about the Chief Justice's independent decision-making process and adherence to established protocols.
Critics argue this situation differs from previous allegations involving judicial staff because it involves an external media entity, raising specific concerns about the interaction between the judiciary and the press.
The panel emphasized that the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court has no professional necessity for frequent high-cost dining, suggesting such events raise questions about undue influence.
A confidentiality agreement regarding the safety of North Korean soldiers and their families was reportedly breached when Ukraine disclosed the presence of POWs at the UN.
The South Korean government had sought to keep the entry of North Korean POWs private to ensure their safety and the safety of their families in North Korea.
The Presidential Office, represented by Press Secretary Seong Ki-hong, accused Ukraine of spreading falsehoods regarding the secret agreement, leading to a diplomatic friction.
An explosion occurred in a hazardous, unmapped area within the DMZ while troops were actively opening a new search route.
The military is proceeding cautiously with investigations due to the extreme terrain risks, while the People Power Party demands faster results and resolution.
Witnesses provided conflicting statements regarding whether the object was a North Korean wood-cased mine or if it was even identified during the search, complicating the investigation.
Critics argue that the People Power Party is prioritizing a political framing of 'appeasing North Korea' over the immediate safety and thorough investigation for the soldiers involved in the operation.
Participants argued that labeling investigations into the DMZ mine explosion as 'appeasing North Korea' is an ineffective and unreasonable political frame.
The panel noted that parents of soldiers currently serving in border regions would be more concerned with safety and proper investigation outcomes than with political grandstanding.
Concerns were raised that a party with former military generals, such as Han Ki-ho, should understand the technical dangers of these search operations rather than pressuring for premature results.
According to a Realmeter poll of 1,000 respondents, presidential approval stood at 37.9% with a disapproval rating of 60.1%.
This data indicates a roughly 3 percentage point rebound in approval compared to the previous week, suggesting a post-holiday shift in public sentiment.
In party support, the Democratic Party recorded 38.7% while the People Power Party garnered 39.4%, indicating a close contest. A separate News Tomato poll of 1,000 respondents reported a 36.5% approval and 60.3% disapproval for the president.

When directly questioned, a Blue House spokesperson refused to confirm or deny whether legal action was actually being prepared.
The official stance remained: "We are checking facts. Nothing has been decided regarding legal action."
Panelists interpreted the Blue House's refusal to deny the 'review' as an implicit confirmation that legal considerations were indeed underway.
Jang Seul-gi argued that the presidential office should address policy criticism with direct counter-arguments rather than resorting to legal threats.
Legal action against political opinions is unlikely to result in convictions as it pertains to 'opinion' rather than 'fact,' rendering such threats largely ineffective in court.
Panelists also noted that past administrations have similarly used the mention of 'legal review' to incite complaints from civic groups, demonstrating a pattern of using legal pressure as a political tactic.
Jang Seul-gi criticized media outlets for framing policy disagreements as binary conflicts, such as 'soothe vs. suppress,' which oversimplifies complex issues.
The practice of using provocative thumbnails to incite online mockery is criticized as unproductive, leading to misinformation and derision.
Political discourse within the progressive camp is observed to be becoming unnecessarily hostile over minor phrasing, hindering constructive debate.
Journalists, therefore, bear a responsibility to provide context and nuance, rather than fueling partisan polarization through sensationalist reporting.
The lack of clear 'traffic control' from the President has resulted in conflicting signals emanating from both the Prime Minister's office and the Justice Ministry.
Direct intervention from the President is expected on sensitive issues like prosecutorial reform to shift focus back to crucial livelihood and economic concerns.
This presidential leadership gap is seen as the core issue, impacting the government's ability to address critical national priorities effectively.
The CGV egg rating, based on verified viewers, for the film 'Assassins' stands at 92 points, indicating strong approval from those who actually watched it.
In contrast, Naver ratings, where anyone can vote without verification, are as low as 2.4 points, showcasing a significant disparity.
Prominent directors like Park Chan-wook and Kim Sung-soo have praised the film's craft, further highlighting the discrepancy between critical reception and general online ratings.
Critics suggest that the film is being used as a target for political and cultural polarization, rather than being judged solely on its cinematic merits.

In February 2005, SBS's 'Unanswered Questions' program already explored similar suspicions regarding the Moon Se-gwang incident in a documentary format.
The broadcast investigated whether the event was used to overshadow the politically sensitive Kim Dae-jung kidnapping incident, suggesting a possible historical cover-up.
Questions were also raised about inconsistencies in the number of gunshots reported and the origin of bullets found at the crime scene, fueling conspiracy theories.
