As the first new product since John Turnus became CEO, attention is focused on whether it will change the market landscape with its high-price policy and differentiated technology.
CEO Turnus recreated Steve Jobs' iconic message, signaling the beginning of a new era. This is seen as Apple's first major move, after having been criticized for a lack of innovative products since the Tim Cook era.
The iPhone Duo is a passport-sized smartphone that unfolds into a 7.6-inch large screen. The hinge, a core component of foldable phones, incorporates over 100 precision parts, and magnets are embedded inside to prevent gaps when folded. Specifically, the screen surface features a nanotexture finish to reduce light reflection, and it is designed so that the crease when the screen is unfolded is less noticeable.
This differentiates it from Samsung Electronics' Galaxy Z Fold 8, which does not support the S Pen.
This is about 1 million won more expensive than the Galaxy Z Fold 8 with the same capacity. The highest capacity model, 2TB, is said to cost 5.09 million won.
Counterpoint Research projects that Samsung Electronics will hold 32%, Apple 25%, and Huawei 24% of the global foldable market this year. This suggests that Apple will rank second after Samsung Electronics from its first year in the foldable phone market.
Apple under Tim Cook's leadership has been criticized for lacking innovative products that could shake the market after the iPhone. Recently, it has also been pointed out that its response to the generative artificial intelligence (AI) competition has been slow, with delays in releasing key features compared to competitors. The success of its first foldable phone and the creation of a turning point in the AI competition will be a test of CEO John Turnus's leadership.
