China's Economy Falters Amidst Leadership Purge

China's labor market is in a dire state, particularly for young people. Recent civil service exams saw an overwhelming 2.8 million applicants vying for just 38,100 positions. This extreme competition points to a significant lack of job opportunities within the private sector and broader economic stagnation.

Official reports claim the Chinese economy grew by 4.3% during the last fiscal quarter, one of the lowest rates ever recorded. However, even high-ranking Chinese officials have reportedly admitted that these economic figures are "man-made and unreliable," raising serious doubts about the actual state of the economy.

As local consumers reduce spending, the country attempts to offload cheap products globally, encountering a saturation point. This has led to international backlash, with the EU imposing tariffs and launching anti-dumping investigations against Chinese products.

The Chinese government is actively targeting elite officials in a move to consolidate power. Fang Xinghai, a former securities regulator credited with transforming Shanghai into an international financial hub, was purged for "serious violations of discipline and laws." Similarly, Ma Xingrui, a former Xinjiang official and leader in the defense industry, has also been removed. These actions show Xi Jinping's strategy of removing talented individuals who lack traditional factional loyalties, regardless of their expertise.

Initially, Xi recruited these experts to bypass existing party factions. However, their intelligence and talent, which could lead to independent ideas on governance, are now perceived as a threat. The regime's priority has shifted from expertise to absolute control.

In 2020, Ma publicly criticized regulators for stifling innovation. Following his comments, he disappeared for five years and lost more than half of his personal wealth. This punitive action against one of China's most successful entrepreneurs acts as a clear warning to other wealthy figures, demonstrating the communist government's willingness to crack down on skilled and productive individuals to maintain control.
