General High School Upward-Tier Early Admission, Indiscriminate Application Leads to Rejection… Strategies for Desired University Acceptance Revealed

As the early admission application period approaches, many students worry about upward-tier applications. They find it difficult to apply because they cannot use upward-tier cards indiscriminately, and sometimes they struggle with whether to apply to unwanted schools for safe or downward-tier options, often ending up deciding on six early admission cards ambiguously. UnivClass pointed out these issues and guided on how to secure safe/downward-tier cards according to original standards and firmly secure upward-tier cards. They emphasized that if the conditions presented today are met, it is advisable to utilize upward-tier cards.

For example, looking at the curriculum-based admission results for Kookmin University's Business Administration department, the 50% cut-off is 2.13 grade, and the 70% cut-off is 2.11 grade, which can be confusing based on grades alone. However, when looking at the converted scores, a student with a 2.13 grade had a converted score of 989.87 points, while a student with a 2.11 grade had 989.25 points, showing that the student with a 2.13 grade had a higher converted score, indicating a more stable trend. Therefore, it is crucial to compare converted scores along with grades to understand admission results.

At Kookmin University, for example, the score difference between grades 1 and 3 is not large, but the score drop increases significantly from grade 3 to 4, and from grade 4 to 5. Sejong University also shows a structure where scores drop by 10 points up to the 3rd grade, then by 30 points from grade 3 to 4, and by 50 points from grade 4 to 5. Due to these score allocation differences, even if a student has high grades in certain subjects, lower grades in other subjects can put them at a disadvantage in converted scores. For example, a student with high grades in Korean, Math, English, and Science but without a 4th grade, might have a higher converted score than a student with overall lower grades in those subjects, making it essential to check converted scores.

While some departments show no changes in admission results over three years, many departments experience significant variability each year. If a particular department's admission results dropped in the previous year, there's a possibility that this year's results could rise to the three-year average or even higher. Therefore, it is crucial to closely examine the three-year admission results of the department you plan to apply to, to understand its variability.

In the 2024 Myongji University admission results, the 70% cut-off was 2.41 grade, and the lowest cut-off was 3.18 grade, which was lower than usual. As many students applied based on these low admission results, the average grade and lowest cut-off both increased in the 2025 academic year. Curriculum-based screening is more susceptible to psychological movements based on numbers than comprehensive student record screening, so if a particular department's 2026 admission results drop significantly by more than 0.5 grade compared to the three-year average, there's a high probability that applicants will flock to it the following year, leading to fierce competition. Therefore, choosing a department where both the three-year average and last year's admission results are stable is necessary for a stable downward-tier application without variables.

The first crucial strategy for upward-tier applications is to check admission results based on GPA with weighted values tailored to the academic field of the department. For humanities students, good grades in Korean, Math, English, and Social Studies are more advantageous for comprehensive student record screening than overall subject grades. Conversely, for natural sciences students, excellent grades in Korean, Math, English, and Science subjects can provide a stronger position in comprehensive student record upward-tier applications. The excellence in core subjects for each field becomes a critical factor in increasing the acceptance rate for upward-tier applications.

Specifically, students whose Korean and Math scores are higher than their overall scores, and within Korean and Math, whose Math and Science scores are higher, are considered to have a definitely higher chance of acceptance in upward-tier comprehensive student record applications.

While the importance of specific subjects is not as clear for humanities students' upward-tier applications as it is for science students, there are a few core subjects. It is advantageous to have better grades in Korean, Math, English, and Social Studies than in all subjects, and important subjects vary by field. Especially in business and economics, excellent grades in English and Math, particularly Math, increase the chances of acceptance. The importance of Math scores is also emphasized in social sciences.

Humanities students benefit from excellent grades in Math and English for their GPA. Especially if they excel in Math and English and also have good grades in social science-related career subjects, it is even more advantageous for admission to top-tier universities.

For example, a student applying to the History department who excels in East Asian History and World History, or a student applying to Philosophy who has good grades in Life and Ethics, and Ethics and Thought, would be highly favored. For language and literature fields, excellent English and a second foreign language scores, or English scores better than Math scores, are more advantageous.

This demonstrates that even for business and economics, the excellence in a specific subject like English can be a decisive factor in upward-tier application acceptance.

This tri-plot comprehensively shows various factors such as academic capability, major suitability, and development potential, allowing an understanding of the distribution and characteristics of successful applicants for a specific department.

For example, the reason why the Department of Liberal Arts had high 50% and 70% averages, while the Department of Media had a low 50% average, can be understood through the tri-plot. The tri-plot for the Department of Liberal Arts shows almost no successful applicants in the 5th and 6th grade ranges, beyond the 3rd and 4th grade ranges, indicating that more than 90% of successful applicants were from general high schools, excluding some specialized or autonomous private high schools. In other words, if the GPA distribution of successful applicants is dense and concentrated in higher grades, there is a high probability that the proportion of successful applicants from general high schools is high.

If a specific department within the same screening type has an unusually low average admission result, it can be interpreted that there is a higher probability of successful applicants coming from specialized or autonomous private high schools. Conversely, if the 50% cut-off is very tightly formed, that department can be judged to have a slightly higher proportion of successful applicants from general high schools. Through the distribution of these average scores and cut-offs, one can predict the characteristics of the department and the applicant pool, and formulate a strategy.

In such cases, the probability of overturning results solely with the student record is relatively low. On the other hand, if the 50% cut-off is 1.59 and the 70% cut-off is 1.87, the grade interval is relatively wide, which means the influence of the student record among similar general high school students becomes greater, and the probability of overturning results is higher.

There are departments or fields where admission results are non-existent, newly established, or have changed from departmental to broader 모집 (recruitment) or vice-versa, making it very difficult to apply past admission results due to high variability. In such departments, the chances of acceptance can increase when upward-tier cards are used aggressively. Because of the high variability, prediction is difficult, which can make a bold application advantageous.

Many students aiming for regular admission apply to these types, but they often fail to meet the minimum requirements or do not attend interviews. Especially, post-SAT interviews increase the likelihood of students focused on regular admission not showing up for interviews, thereby lowering the actual competition rate. Therefore, even for comprehensive student record screening, types with minimum requirements and interviews are worth considering for upward-tier applications.
