Philippine Frigate Challenges Chinese Warships

Chinese ships issued repeated radio challenges to the Philippine vessel, BRP Diego Silang, ordering it to alter its course and immediately leave the area. These demands were made multiple times as the Philippine frigate patrolled near Escoda Shoal, creating a tense standoff.

"Sovereignty altercourse to port leave immediately."

In response to the Chinese demands, the Philippine bridge officer invoked the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), asserting the vessel's presence within the Philippine exclusive economic zone and the Kalayaan Island group. The officer characterized the Chinese presence and actions as illegal and a threat to Philippine national security, firmly stating Manila's legal position.

"This is Philippine Navy Warship 7. You are within the Philippine exclusive economic zone and Kalayaan Island group. You are a state party to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Your statements and actions are illegal and are threats to Philippine national security"

Manila's approach to the maritime dispute relies on legal frameworks rather than military might. Its case is firmly based on a treaty that Beijing itself signed, underscoring the international legal obligations. Furthermore, the Philippines references the 2016 arbitral ruling, which found that China's expansive claims in the South China Sea had no legal basis under international law, strengthening Manila's position.
