Trump Administration Implements 'Anaconda Strategy' Against Iran, Blockading Strait of Hormuz

This strategy is proving highly effective due to Iran's significant dependence on imports, stemming from a lack of domestic investment. A critical recent development involved the UAE severing Iran's access to Dubai and international financial markets, a move described as a "huge" blow to Iran's commerce. Victoria Coates explained, "Slowly over the summer, we are having what my former boss, K.T. McFarland, has been calling the Anaconda strategy, which is we're just strangling them. And the big move last night by UAE to cut them off from Dubai from any kind of commerce with the international financial markets, huge."

Earlier predictions of $200 per barrel oil in March and April never materialized, indicating the stability of global oil markets. The US is currently achieving record highs in both natural gas and oil production, ensuring robust domestic supply. This strong domestic production ensures that current policies are not creating an energy crisis, and the situation is not seen as a decisive factor in midterm election polling. Victoria Coates stated, "The $200 barrel oil that we were promised in March and April never manifested. And this is not a crisis by any stretch of the imagination in terms of the supply on the market. And we're hitting record highs in terms of what our production is both in natural gas and oil every single day."

The current administration has taken unprecedented steps, becoming the first in 47 years to inflict major kinetic harm on Iran. This military action is combined with a refined strategy dubbed "Maximum Pressure 2.0," which integrates kinetic force with economic sanctions. The approach is expected to be effective, with President Trump reportedly committed to maintaining the current course. Victoria Coates commented, "He's done the one thing no president has done for 47 years, which is inflict major kinetic harm on Iran. He's combining that with maximum pressure 2.0. I think it's going to work."

President Trump's initial comments about blockading the Strait of Hormuz at a rally were likely made in jest, but he amplified the stance when it garnered significant media attention. His core message is an assertion of control over the strait, ensuring free commerce and determining who can pass through. Despite potential criticism, Trump is expected to double down on this position. Victoria Coates suggested, "I actually think he was joking when he first said it at that rally a couple of days ago cuz he was laughing. Uh but then he saw that it touched a nerve. ... I think what he's saying there is, 'Yes, we are the people who control the strait. We're going to see who goes in and out. We're going to ensure free commerce.'"

Iran's indiscriminate shelling of Kuwait, a nation that has never posed a threat, and its hostile actions toward Qatar, previously its closest regional ally, have led to significant isolation. The UAE's recent move to restrict Iran's access to international financial markets has further exacerbated this isolation, significantly pressuring the Iranian regime. Threats directed towards Europe also signal a potential for broader sanctions and further diplomatic fallout. Victoria Coates remarked, "It's really brutal. ... They have been indiscriminately shelling Kuwait, who never posed any harm to Iran. Qatar, who's been their closest friend in the region. UAE, who has controlled their access to international financial markets. ... The entire region hates them."

There is a growing push for the European Union to impose sanctions on Iran, particularly following revelations of Iranian proxy plots to carry out widespread attacks in Europe on the anniversary of October 7th. Austria and France are being highlighted as key countries to spearhead such actions. There is an urgent call for NATO allies to provide a stronger and more coordinated response to Iranian aggression and these emerging threats. Victoria Coates emphasized, "So I think the EU should cut them off because there is also a plot revealed recently that Iranian proxies were planning to do widespread attacks in Europe on the anniversary of October 7th. ... I think all of this needs to be watched very closely and we need a much stronger response out of our NATO allies."
