Nickel mining, New Caledonia's key industry, is in crisis due to political instability and intensifying international competition.
Since 1881, the French company 'Le Nickel' began mining here, making it one of the world's largest nickel mines and a key driver of the local economy.
Since the French company 'Le Nickel' began mining in 1881, this mine has become a core driver of New Caledonia's economy.
The Thio mine has been completely shut down since 2024, with recurring political tensions and blockades already weakening mining activities.
The 2024 riots delivered a decisive blow to already struggling infrastructure, accelerating population outflow from the mine-dependent Thio region.
This region, where entire generations have worked in mining, now faces a severe economic crisis.
The New Caledonian nickel industry faces intense competition, particularly from Indonesia. Indonesia has lower energy costs, labor costs that are one-fifth, and less stringent environmental regulations.
Due to these differences in production costs and environmental regulations, New Caledonia's SLN (Société Le Nickel) is losing competitiveness and is currently sustained only by French government subsidies.
The French government is injecting subsidies into SLN with the goal of achieving profitability by 2029-2030, but the feasibility of this is uncertain due to international market conditions and high production costs.
Hugo Nomoara, a former employee of an SLN subcontractor, now acts as a spokesperson for a group of young Kanaks and is in conflict with SLN.
He opposes the resumption of mining activities without clear guarantees for the environment and local development, maintaining a firm stance different from past compromises.
