Taiwan's Live-Fire Han Kuang Drills Amid Routine Chinese Provocations

Taiwan is conducting its largest-ever Han Kuang drills, strengthening its practical defense posture against a potential Chinese invasion. Military critic Kim Dae-young explained that these drills proceeded without a set scenario, assigning unexpected situations to each unit, and simulating conditions close to actual warfare, such as communication network outages and drone attacks on logistical facilities.

These Han Kuang drills focused on improving Taiwan's actual defense capabilities and raising awareness of the Chinese threat.

The Chinese military has recently been normalizing pressure by deploying large-scale forces around Taiwan daily. Military critic Kim Dae-young mentioned that this increases the possibility of war, and concerns are growing about the depletion of U.S. defensive assets.

Such actions by China are escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

The near depletion of U.S. THAAD and Patriot missile stockpiles is increasing the risk of a security vacuum due to a shortage of defensive weapons. Military critic Kim Dae-young pointed out that from China's perspective, seeing this situation could lead them to think, 'Maybe we can give it a try now?'

This could act as an incentive for China to take military action, further destabilizing security in the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan's land area is not large, comparable to South Gyeongsang and North Gyeongsang provinces, limiting defensive options. Military critic Kim Dae-young explained that choices for maneuver are restricted, and even with a central mountain range, China can largely predict where and what Taiwan will do.

These geographical constraints can reduce Taiwan's tactical flexibility, adding to defense difficulties.

Taiwan is no longer conducting mere show drills and is shifting its training to strengthen practical responses. Military critic Kim Dae-young explained that in the past, the goal was to prevent Chinese amphibious landings, but now many drills consider scenarios even after a landing.

In particular, communication network and internet speed restrictions are applied as in actual war, and joint exercises with the U.S. military are also increasing, enhancing the realism of the drills.

China is intensifying its policy of eradicating minority and regional languages through the standardization of the Chinese language. Military critic Kim Dae-young pointed out that currently, almost all minority language education has been eliminated, and only Chinese is taught.

A prime example is the minimization of regional language education, such as Cantonese, in Hong Kong's elementary school curriculum. These policies appear to be an attempt to suppress diverse cultures within China and strengthen centralized control.
