Grok 4.6 Reaches Parity with Leaders, Elon Plans 4.7 & 5

Grok 4.6 has achieved performance parity with current industry leaders on independent leaderboards, while maintaining a cost point roughly half that of its competitors. This performance breakthrough, combined with recent integrations into Tesla vehicles, marks a significant shift in the perception of Grok from a side project to a serious contender in the AI market.

"Now, it's generally seen that Grock 4.6 has caught the leaders on the independent leaderboards at half the price."

This places Grok ahead of rivals such as OpenAI's GPT-5.6 and Kimi K3. The model also secured the top spot on the Databricks leaderboard, reinforcing its competitive position.

"Artificial analysis, probably the most watched independent benchmark shop right now. They run every model through the same exam, which is why everybody cites them, scored at 61 on their intelligence index."

Grok 4.6 is priced at $2 per million input tokens, significantly undercutting OpenAI's comparable model, which charges $5. This pricing advantage is a critical factor for companies managing massive AI workloads, making Grok a more economically viable option for widespread adoption.

"Grock 4.6 costs two bucks per million input tokens. OpenAI's comparable model charges five. So, you're getting Frontier tier intelligence at roughly half price."

This statement underscores XAI's confidence in Grok's overall performance and competitive edge in the rapidly evolving AI market.

"objectively number one when considering intelligence speed and cost."

Initial skepticism regarding Musk's AI claims led to a delayed perception of Grok's capabilities. However, objective leaderboard scores from independent third parties, which quickly placed Grok alongside OpenAI, significantly altered developer perceptions. This shift has led many developers to adopt Grok, primarily due to its superior price-to-performance metrics.

"Independent shops putting Grock next to OpenAI on a leaderboard within 48 hours that changes it."

The initial training for 4.7 is complete, with a substantial amount of proprietary SpaceX company data being integrated for supplemental training, which Musk believes will make it "something special."

"Grock 4.7 is significantly better than 4.6 and should be ready in 3 to 4 weeks. Initial training is complete and now we're adding a massive amount of SpaceX company data in supplemental training. This will be something special."

"Grock 4.7 will exceed all current models. That said, Anthropic is a great company and will probably release improved models soon. However, the SpaceX training corpus is so awesome and unique that I would be shocked if any model is better at realworld engineering than Grock 4.7."

This includes sensitive information such as flight telemetry, manufacturing records, and detailed failure investigations, which cannot be accessed or purchased externally. This unique dataset enables Grok to function as a highly specialized engineering tool, aiding in the design and development of advanced projects like Optimus and Starship.

"Because it's two decades of real engineering inside one company. Tesla standate, flight telemetry, manufacturing records, failure investigations. You can't scrape that off the internet and you can't buy it because it only exists inside SpaceX."

XAI is pursuing an aggressive release schedule, with Grok 4.6 launched in August, 4.7 slated for September, and Grok 5 expected by December. This rapid cadence of three frontier-tier AI model releases within five months significantly outpaces competitors like OpenAI, who typically release two major models annually. This strategy aims to establish a strategic competitive advantage through continuous innovation and deployment, while acknowledging that other companies like Anthropic are also making rapid advancements.

"The cadence he's promising is 4.6 in August, 4.7 in September, Gro 5 by December. That's three Frontier releases in five months when OpenAI and ship roughly two big models a year."

Elon Musk previously indicated in June that Grok-based FSD voice control was approximately three months away. The goal is to enable a chauffeur-like experience where passengers can interact with the vehicle using natural language, an interface crucial for future robo-taxi services. This integration will leverage fleet-wide user training before full-scale deployment.

"Ashok Alleswami who runs AI Tesla he confirmed they're actively connecting Grock to FSD and Elon said back in June the Grock based FSD voice control was about 3 months out... you talk to the car like it like as if is a chauffeur you'll tell it turn right here you know drop us off at the entrance first then go find a park"

Unlike OpenAI and Anthropic, which rely on app-based distribution, Elon Musk benefits from owning a fleet of millions of Tesla vehicles, providing a massive physical distribution network for Grok. This allows Grok to become the default AI service for millions of Tesla owners at no additional cost to Musk, as he controls both the AI software and the hardware. This integrated approach bypasses billions in potential partnership costs and offers a significant competitive advantage in AI deployment.

"Grock just took the default AI seat in millions of Teslas cost Elon nothing because he owns both sides of the deal."

Grokbot's operations are built upon the infrastructure of Cursor, a company recently acquired by SpaceX. This integration signals the strategic purpose of the acquisition, providing a robust platform for Grokbot's agentic AI capabilities. The platform, which offers a $200 monthly tier for professionals, is also expected to launch an Android version soon, broadening its consumer reach.

"The bots actually run on Curser's infrastructure. So this launch is also your first look at what that acquisition was for."

Reviewers have drawn comparisons between Grokbot and OpenClaw (Open Interpreter), noting that Grokbot offers a more refined and finished product experience, devoid of the 'rough edges' often found in open-source tools. While OpenClaw is suitable for tinkerers, Grokbot is presented as a polished, hosted, and supervised solution. This strategic positioning, combined with XAI's expansion of cheaper access tiers, aims to meet a broad market demand.

"Grockbot is that same idea as a finished product hosted and supervised with a set of pain sanded down."

This initiative aims to run AI workloads directly in orbit, addressing significant terrestrial challenges related to power, cooling, and regulatory permits. By moving AI compute to space, SpaceX seeks to overcome infrastructure limitations faced by ground-based data centers.

"It's the first satellite in a planned constellation build to run AI workloads directly in orbit on Nvidia's Reuben GPUs and Vera CPUs."

This massive infrastructure utilizes around 770,000 GPUs, which largely run off-grid, supported by a dedicated gas plant. This substantial ground-based AI compute facility underpins XAI's ambitious AI development and training efforts.

Anthropic has entered into a significant agreement with SpaceX, committing to pay $1.25 billion per month to utilize the Colossus AI infrastructure through 2029. This deal positions Anthropic as a major client, effectively renting compute power from a rival in the AI space. The arrangement highlights the immense demand for high-end AI compute resources and the strategic value of SpaceX's infrastructure.

"a billion and a quarter of month a month to rent out all of Colossus one SpaceX AI through 2029."

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is already monitoring FSD with open investigations, signaling a heightened level of scrutiny. As AI takes on more critical roles in driving systems, regulators are likely to impose more stringent requirements and oversight to ensure safety and reliability.

These could include structured licensing fees for AI technology, revenue-sharing agreements on joint ventures, or even equity exchanges between the companies. Ultimately, a full merger between Tesla and SpaceX remains a long-term possibility, consolidating their technological and strategic assets.
