Philippines Tests New Warship in Pacific Exercise

The Philippines dispatched one of its most capable warships, the guided missile frigate BRP Miguel Malvar, across the Pacific to participate in RIMPAC 2026. This deployment aimed to put the vessel through a demanding test, training with some of the world's most advanced naval forces. This marked the Coast Guard's first active involvement in the exercise, moving beyond its previous role as an observer. RIMPAC 2026 showcased an impressive scale of international cooperation, with the final US Navy count indicating participation from 30 nations. The exercise involved 30 surface ships, five submarines, over 197 aircraft, and more than 30,000 personnel. This massive assembly demonstrated the collective commitment of global naval forces to interoperability and maritime security.

A critical aspect of the RIMPAC exercise involved replenishment at sea training, conducted on July 11th with the USNS Guadalupe. This vital skill ensures that warships can maintain distant operations for extended periods by safely receiving fuel and supplies while underway. The BRP Miguel Malvar participated in high-intensity combat simulations, including combined anti-submarine and air defense exercises. These drills involved collaboration with Singaporean and US destroyers, where ships rotated responsibility for anti-air warfare coordination. The exercises tested the ability of different navies to integrate their command structures and maintain a common defensive picture without disrupting the wider force, utilizing assets like F-35s and other aircraft to simulate threats.

During RIMPAC 2026, the Philippine crew of the BRP Miguel Malvar operated in a fast-paced environment, managing threats, communication, and situational awareness amidst complex multinational integration. The exercise featured an extensive schedule of over 500 training events and 2,400 aircraft sorties conducted over five weeks. Participating forces executed diverse drills, including anti-submarine warfare, strike operations, and integrated air defense, demanding peak performance and seamless coordination from all involved.

The BRP Miguel Malvar achieved an impressive third-place finish in the highly competitive Naval Surface Fire Support (NSFS) multinational live-fire event. On July 14, the ship fired five salvos from its 76-mm gun at a target located 3.5 miles away, showcasing the professionalism and competency of its personnel. This achievement is particularly notable for a vessel commissioned only one year prior, following the success of the BRP Antonio Luna which also placed third in 2022.

While RIMPAC 2026 included high-profile sinking exercises (SINKEX) involving the USS Mobile Bay and USS Peleliu, the BRP Miguel Malvar did not participate in these events. The Philippines' deployment focused primarily on building operational proficiency and enhancing interoperability with international partners. The emphasis was on defensive capabilities and multinational coordination rather than demonstrating offensive long-range strike power.

After two months of intensive training, the BRP Miguel Malvar returned to Subic on August 20, rejoining a strategic reality marked by escalating tensions with China in the South China Sea. Chinese Coast Guard presence at Scarborough Shoal intensified, accumulating 933 ship days in the first half of 2026. Chinese military activity reached a peak in May, including notable displays of force near Second Thomas Shoal on August 1st, underscoring the persistent challenges to Philippine maritime sovereignty.

The Philippines is committed to further expanding its naval fleet, having signed a contract with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries for two additional 3,200-ton frigates. These new vessels will be based on the successful Miguel Malvar design, ensuring standardization of the fleet's capabilities and streamlining maintenance and operations.
