US Marines Deploy NMESIS in Philippines Amid China's Watch

Marine Corps. This system is described by the Marine Corps Systems Command as a remotely operated launcher built on a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) chassis.

NMESIS is armed with two Naval Strike Missiles (NSM) and is specifically designed to threaten enemy ships, allowing for rapid relocation to avoid detection and targeting.

During exercise Balikatan 2026, U.S. Marines from the Third Marine Littoral Regiment and U.S. Army personnel loaded a missile launcher, alongside a HIMARS rocket launcher, onto a U.S. Army landing craft utility at Calayan in Cagayan on May 2nd. This movement demonstrates the ability of forces to transport critical weapon systems by sea, enhancing their operational flexibility.

The use of landing craft for transport allows these forces to avoid being tied to fixed coastal positions, improving survivability and strategic reach.

The province is approximately 160 kilometers from Taiwan at its nearest commonly cited distance, with some northern Philippine islands even closer.

Beijing differentiates between NMESIS, a Marine Corps anti-ship system, and Typhon, an Army mid-range system that can include SM-6 and Tomahawk missiles.
