Judge Reyes rebukes government over Trump golf course renovation

Elie Hoenig, a legal analyst, says the president's public statements put the government's lawyers in a difficult position. Across several appearances, the legal team assured the court that no renovation was imminent.

Over the weekend, Trump posted in all caps that renovation would begin 'IMMEDIATELY.' Asked directly whether a renovation plan existed, the government struggled to answer, a moment that explains the judge's frustration, Hoenig says.

The case concerns a golf course, but it also reflects the president's wider efforts, including changes to the East Wing and the Kennedy Center, Hoenig observes. The hearing lasted about seven hours and grilled several senior officials from the Interior and Justice Departments.

Perriman, president of Democracy Forward, one of the groups representing the plaintiffs, calls the project a threat to public land that belongs to everyone, and says it breaks several laws while harming nearby communities. She argued it would take away valuable public land available to everyone.
