Frontier developers exhibit three distinct behaviors that set them apart. Firstly, they engage in 'hands-off coding,' where AI agents are responsible for writing 98-99% of the code, significantly reducing manual input.

Secondly, these developers practice 'infrequent interaction,' allowing assistants to run for hours without constant oversight. Thirdly, they leverage 'parallelism' by running multiple agents simultaneously, thereby minimizing idle time and maximizing efficiency.

The Bedrock Mantle team at Amazon achieved a remarkable 20x improvement in productivity by adopting frontier development practices. A project that was initially estimated to require 30 people over 18 months was completed by a team of six in just 76 days using Kiro. This involved building a new inference data plane, a complex task that typically demands significant resources and time.

This case study demonstrated the immense potential for accelerating development cycles and significantly reducing resource allocation through agent-based workflows, establishing a new benchmark for software project delivery.

The Prime Video organization conducted a 10-day structured sprint to verify the productivity gains observed in other teams. This sprint aimed to replicate high productivity results within a different engineering context. During this period, the team managed to reduce the estimated project delivery time from 90 weeks down to 24 weeks.

The first habit for frontier developers involves continuously investing in agent context, effectively building a persistent knowledge base. This means transferring an engineer's mental models and implicit knowledge into explicit 'steering files' that guide the AI agent. When an agent makes a mistake, developers proactively identify what information or instruction was missing in these files.

Agents require continuous maintenance as models evolve; outdated steering instructions must be pruned to prevent context bloating and ensure the agent remains efficient and accurate.

The second habit, 'slowing down to speed up,' addresses the counterintuitive reality that productivity often dips during the initial transition to AI-driven workflows. Preparing existing codebases for effective AI interaction requires intentional engineering work, which can temporarily decrease immediate output. Teams need to invest time in refactoring and cleaning up their code, sometimes even migrating to strongly-typed languages like TypeScript or Rust, which offer better compatibility and performance with AI agents.

This upfront investment is crucial for overcoming the 'speed trap' of legacy systems and ultimately achieving the significant, long-term productivity improvements observed in high-performing teams.

The third habit focuses on 'feeding agents instead of babysitting,' promoting autonomous workflows over constant human-agent interaction. Engaging in 'vibe coding,' characterized by continuous back-and-forth conversations with the agent, significantly diminishes productivity gains because the human remains deeply 'in the loop' for the entire process. Instead, successful workflows involve providing agents with complete context and self-validation mechanisms.

This approach allows agents to operate more independently, focusing on batching tasks rather than requiring constant monitoring, thereby freeing developers to tackle more complex or strategic challenges.

The fourth habit emphasizes making intent explicit through detailed design before writing code, a cornerstone of frontier engineering. Iterating on requirements and specifications with an agent is far more efficient than iterating on the actual code, especially when the initial intent is unclear. Amazon engineers often tackle ambiguous or complex features by first thoroughly documenting the specification, ensuring clarity.

Writing clear and unambiguous specifications is crucial because vague prompts lead to agents misinterpreting requirements, resulting in high levels of rework. By front-loading the design phase, teams can prevent costly errors and improve the efficiency of agent-driven code generation.
