Teodoro on China: Philippines Ready for Anything

Teodoro stated that if the Vice President genuinely lacked trust in the armed forces personnel assigned to her, she could formally request their withdrawal.

He emphasized that protection by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is considered a security privilege, not an unconditional right, and affirmed that the government is not forcing the current security arrangement upon her.

Teodoro vigorously defended the military's professionalism, asserting that soldiers should not be viewed through narrow political or personal lenses. He reiterated that the primary responsibility of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is to preserve and defend the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of the Philippines against all threats.

As of his statement, Teodoro confirmed that he had not received a formal request to replace the Vice President’s security detail, underscoring the ongoing adherence to established protocols within the military.

Colonel Raymond Dante Lacha and Colonel D. Nolasco have been repeatedly mentioned during ongoing proceedings concerning the handling of confidential funds within the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education. These allegations involve significant sums, specifically P500 million from the Vice President's office and P125 million from the Department of Education, drawing military officials into the controversy.

The military has actively cooperated with the Ombudsman inquiry into these matters, demonstrating its commitment to transparency. As a result of the ongoing investigations, Colonel Lacha has been reassigned to an unassigned status, pending further developments in the inquiry.

Prosecutors stated their belief that the evidence already presented was sufficient for their case, indicating a strategic shift in their approach.

Despite this, the possibility remains that these officers could still be called to testify by the defense team. The Armed Forces of the Philippines has publicly pledged to respect the ongoing impeachment process, maintaining its neutrality and adherence to legal proceedings.

Secretary Teodoro is concurrently managing domestic military issues, such as security protocols and fund allegations, while addressing significant regional disputes in the West Philippine Sea. Manila faces the formidable challenge of defending its maritime rights, recognized under international law, when confronted by a much more powerful neighbor.

China continues to reject the 2016 arbitral ruling, instead calling for bilateral dialogue to resolve the dispute. Teodoro’s warning in Seoul signals the Philippines' readiness to withstand long-term pressure and maintain its assertive stance on its sovereign rights.

Manila intends to continue asserting the 2016 arbitral award, which affirmed its maritime entitlements.
