Animate Keyframes in Under 10 Minutes

Animator Rj Animations introduces a simple three-step process to master keyframe animation, enabling the creation of high-quality animations. The tutorial aims to equip viewers with skills that could lead to professional opportunities in studios like MAPPA.

"Today I'm going to show you how to animate key frames and with a very simple three-step process you will finally be able to create cool animations that could get you a job at MAPPA," states Rj Animations.

The initial step in animation involves simplifying character designs using a shorthand drawing technique, which is crucial for rough animations. This method, often employed by storyboard artists, allows animators to quickly sketch mannequin figures from character design sheets.

Shorthand drawings reduce complex characters to their most basic shapes, enabling faster drawing and animation during the rough animation phase and enhancing efficiency.

The process begins with establishing a natural starting pose, which forms the foundation of the character's movement.

Next, an anticipation pose is created by testing various positions to determine the optimal impact, followed by the action pose which sets the movement trajectory, with its distance from anticipation influencing the snap of the action. The sequence concludes with the impact pose, marking the moment of contact, and then the bounce back and landing poses, completing the full action cycle.

This standardized structure simplifies the animation process, providing a consistent framework for most actions.

"After all that we now have six key poses right here the starting pose the anticipation pose the action pose the impact pose the bounce back pose and the landing pose," Rj Animations explains. This 5-6 pose structure remains consistent across different animation cuts, ensuring a unified approach.

Adjusting the timing of key poses is a crucial, iterative process that often requires extensive trial and error. Animators frequently find themselves modifying key poses and timing simultaneously to achieve the desired flow.

"This is the point where again trial and error is crucial I often try a lot of things when creating the timing of these key poses to the point that I often change the key poses itself," states Rj Animations. This back-and-forth adjustment is streamlined by using shorthand drawings, which allow for rapid iteration without committing to detailed visuals.

Breakdown drawings are introduced to connect key poses, providing clearer motion and adding crucial detail to the animation. These drawings help animators understand the actions taken more clearly by revealing additional movements such as spinning or follow-through.

"I started to also introduce breakdown drawings that connect the key poses together these breakdown drawings are still considered as key drawings because they help you understand the actions taken more clearly," explains Rj Animations, emphasizing their role in clarifying the storytelling within the animation.

To implement camera movement within the animation, keyframes are applied directly to the camera folder. This method ensures that all animation folders contained within are uniformly affected by the camera's motion.

"The animation and we do this by creating key frames on our camera folder and moving this box using the operation tool. This camera folder contains all of our animation folder so everything within will be affected by this camera movement," Rj Animations clarifies. The final step involves adding the character to the rough drawings, a phase that often proves to be the most time-consuming due to the meticulous attention required. This process necessitates strong fundamental drawing skills to maintain character consistency and accuracy.

Animators must ensure the character adheres to the design model, often referencing character design sheets. Raster sketches serve as the foundational layer, which are then refined into vector line art, demanding precision and careful execution.

One effective method involves tracing parts of previous drawings, such as the head, and making only necessary adjustments.

"There are actually some tips and tricks you can do to make this more of a faster process. One technique I do is to actually trace parts of my previous drawings like the head and adjust some parts of it if necessary," Rj Animations notes. This approach, combined with using separate layers for lines, shadows, and highlights, and employing the paint bucket tool for quick coloring, helps maintain consistency while only redrawing elements like hair or clothing that change between frames.

This technique is particularly effective when copying and pasting static body parts that do not undergo significant changes.

"This is the reason why I use Vector layers in this process because this makes my lines easier to edit. This will only make sense if the actual part of the body you are copying doesn't change at all," explains Rj Animations. The primary goal is to leverage every available tool to maximize efficiency throughout the production pipeline.

This iterative approach is a natural part of the learning and creation process.

"Toward the end I actually went ahead and changed my rough animation a bit after the punch and that's okay. Sometimes even if you have the rough animation or layout done you may feel that you can still improve on it when you do your genga," Rj Animations confirms, allowing for adjustments to enhance the animation's quality, even after the initial roughs are complete.

A crucial next step in animation involves systematically naming drawings with labels such as A1, A2, A3, and so forth, to ensure proper organization. This labeling facilitates the insertion of in-between frames, which smooth out the motion between keyframes.

"The next step is to actually name these drawings with A1, A2, A3 and so on and so forth and I'm trying to see if I could add an in-between frame between two key frames. My rule of thumb is that if I have four or six frames in between two drawings I can at least introduce one or two in-betweens," Rj Animations explains, providing a practical guideline.
