Most agentic tool usage today is concentrated within this field, with other types of work trailing far behind. The true secret behind the success of coding agents is not merely the improvement of AI models, but the existing infrastructure. Systems like Git, CI/CD, and linters were already designed for automation, making coding environments inherently 'agent-ready.' Karan Vaidya emphasizes that this pre-existing infrastructure is what enabled AI agents to flourish in the coding domain.

There are six core primitives that are essential for AI agent success, all of which are present in coding but largely absent in knowledge work. Building these foundational elements is crucial to extend AI agent capabilities beyond software development. The first of these critical pillars is centralization.

Coding agents thrive because they operate within a central repository, like a codebase, where all necessary information is readily available in a single place. In contrast, knowledge work is highly fragmented, with crucial data scattered across numerous applications such as Salesforce, Notion, and Slack. Knowledge work, however, typically lacks such a comprehensive record, meaning agents must start from a blank slate with each new task, unable to leverage previous experiences.

Operational context for AI agents exists in two crucial dimensions: the 'map' and the 'style' of organizational work. The 'map' refers to the platform's architecture and how information flows between different components, providing an objective understanding of the system. Natural language policies can be used to control agent actions, specifying preventive rules such as limiting email deletions or restricting access to certain domains. This combined approach ensures real governance by enforcing what an agent can do, rather than merely asking it to behave, thereby enhancing safety and reliability.

The final pillar is reversibility, which becomes critical when things go wrong: the ability to undo actions. In coding, almost every change is recorded and can be walked back, making it relatively safe to experiment and correct mistakes. In contrast, many actions in knowledge work, such as deleting emails or initiating wire transfers, are permanent and lack an 'undo' button. This fundamental difference in reversibility significantly alters the risk profile, making knowledge work inherently less forgiving than coding.
