Stripe Executive: "One Engineer Does the Work of Two Teams"

In a conversation with a16z General Partner David George, Stripe President of Product and Business Will Gaybrick defined the goal of development productivity in the AI era as creating "founder-like agency" inside the company. That agency is needed to ship more and build faster, he said.

He said, "One engineer can do what two engineering teams did two years ago." He followed with the diagnosis that as what can be done with software expands, the landscape of market opportunity itself has become far broader.

"That's where the world is going," he added.

This remark extends his answer to why agentic commerce hasn't exploded yet. As Stripe merges far more code than last year, every system is under strain.

Gaybrick himself called his "let's build everything" framing "a bit cheeky." In reality, the volume of code merges Stripe must handle is growing independently of that slogan.

His reference to the 'Opus 45 Cambrian explosion' points to a phase agentic commerce has yet to experience. The rise in code merge volume was presented as the cause of that delay.

Stripe Billing's year-over-year usage growth rate is far higher than Stripe's overall usage growth rate. The reason Gaybrick gave is that billing usage is disproportionately concentrated among the people building software companies.

He cited agentic coding lowering the barrier to development as the backdrop for the surge in new software creation. As building becomes easier, more people want to build, and those people become billing customers.

George called the figure "fantastic," then turned the topic to how Stripe ships so many products.

Gaybrick said the main factor holding back Stripe's progress is now the back office. As Stripe merges far more code than last year, every system is under strain.

The friction points he named are getting products into seller systems, putting them on pricing pages, and bringing products to market without educating sellers fast enough.

The stated goal is to optimize every step of the critical path from an idea and a user request to a product reaching users' hands.

His two answers are creating founder-like agency for everyone at Stripe and having development and production teams make the tools better. In his words, employees are currently bogged down in a swamp of centralized processes.

Gaybrick acknowledged that the early narrative of 'do more with fewer resources' now that agents exist still lingers and is partly true. But he drew a line, saying what he actually worries about is making employees more productive.

The internal tool Kai was built by two people about six months ago. Usage reaches 83% weekly active and about 60% daily active.

Seller productivity rose 20%, and Stripe's conclusion was not to cut sellers but that "we need far more sellers."

He cited the Jevons paradox as the basis. The logic is that when an asset becomes more productive, you don't want to use it less—you want to use it more.

Strike Tax users wanted filing features for each country. Strike Tax had already automated US filing state by state.

Gaybrick called this a hard problem. Each jurisdiction accepts filings differently.

Yet global filing was built in about one-third the time it took to reach US filing. This was despite higher complexity.

When George pointed out "even with far greater complexity," Gaybrick confirmed it.

'Stripe Projects,' which Stripe launched, is narrowly a tool for setting up apps, but in reality it is a means of provisioning B2B services agentically, he explained.

The example he gave is an agent adopting Vercel for hosting. The user doesn't need to go to vercel.com and do anything. Browserbase was named as another service an agent could adopt.

George said this story influenced a16z's recent developer tool investment thesis.

The question he poses to portfolio founders is, "Assuming agents will be the buyers of the future, is this a product an agent would choose?"

Calling himself an "infrastructure nerd," Gaybrick said he sees stablecoins as a better platform for moving money.

He noted that in India about 86% of payments under $5 are made via UPI. In the US, cards account for only single digits in the same range. Brazil's Pix also grew rapidly as a cheap and fast national payment network.

The problem is that both UPI and Pix are national in scope. He argued the global economy needs a common ground everyone can agree on, and that crypto payment networks solve this political problem. That's because the platform works anywhere.

Stripe integrated stablecoins natively into Strike Treasury so users can hold balances in dollars, euros, and pounds. Fiat-supported countries number about 60, while stablecoin-supported countries number about 150. He added that two engineers in Thailand can build an AI company just as well as those in the US or Brazil.

Gaybrick said, "I've always liked the word token." That's because it sounds like an approximation of currency.

Attacks targeting token consumers are already happening. In general-purpose token-consuming services like Cursor or Replit, almost anything can be done with tokens, making them attack targets.

He said such attacks are sophisticated and resemble attempts to steal Stripe users' money.

His explanation is that Stripe will apply the same duty to tokens—helping users move, store, and send money safely and in compliance. He expects this need to grow as long-running agent tasks replace work.
