US Marines Deploy NMESIS Missiles to Philippine Batanes

The Navy Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System, better known as NMESIS, gives the US Marine Corps a mobile land-based anti-ship capability. The weapon is built around two naval strike missiles carried on a remotely operated launcher based on the joint light tactical vehicle platform—a design meant to be difficult to detect and track. The US Department of Defense was renamed the Department of War on September 5th, 2025. Pete Hegseth's title changed from Secretary of Defense to Secretary of War, a designation reflected on the official website as of 2026.

From June 19th through June 29th, American and Philippine Marines conducted KAMANDAG across expeditionary sites in the Batanes Islands. The US Third Marine Literal Regiment trained alongside the Philippine Marine Corps Fourth Marine Brigade in maritime security, sensing, logistics, air defense, and simulated maritime strike operations. NMESIS was distributed through the island environment alongside the Marine Air Defense Integrated System, or MADIS, as well as maritime sensors and personnel, demonstrating how these systems would operate as an integrated network across dispersed locations.

That challenge is exactly what the exercises are attempting to solve. The integration of logistics with defensive capabilities across remote locations demonstrates the operational reality the forces must master.

Rather than concentrating large numbers of Marines at major fixed installations, the force is designed to operate through smaller dispersed formations around strategically important coastal areas. Those forces combine intelligence, surveillance, air defense, logistics, and long-range fires while frequently relocating. NMESIS fits naturally into this distributed structure, where mobility and adaptability replace the permanence of traditional military bases.

China portrays the deployment of advanced American weapons as a destabilizing expansion of US military power into the region. Philippine officials argue that cooperation with Washington and other partners is necessary to strengthen deterrence and protect Philippine territory, sovereign rights, and maritime interests. The two sides fundamentally disagree over how military buildup should be understood and justified.

When Balikatan 2026 opened, Jan Romeo Bronner Jr. was chief of staff of the Philippine Armed Forces, emphasizing the partnership with the phrase, "When nations stand together, shoulder-to-shoulder with trust, purpose, and resolve, we are always stronger." Throughout the transition, Gilberto Teodoro continued as national defense secretary under President Marcos.

Philippine and Chinese vessels continue to face each other around contested areas of the South China Sea, including Yongen Shaw, internationally known as Second Thomas Shoal, and Bakodumlock, or Scarborough Shoal. These disputes remain unresolved. The 1951 US mutual defense treaty with the Philippines applies to armed attacks on either country's forces in the South China Sea, covering armed forces, aircraft, and public vessels including the Coast Guard.

At a June 2026 symposium, Chinese scholars argued that Batanes was geographically connected to Taiwan in a way that supported a Chinese claim to the Philippine province. Those comments were reported by Chinese media and triggered an angry reaction in Manila.
