Kanye West Discusses His Reputation, Open Innovation, and Fighting Social Divisions

Kanye West argues that his public image, often labeled as a "bad reputation," is actually the best reputation to have because it signifies a refusal to conform. He criticizes a society that encourages individuals to hide their true ideas and identities, likening it to tucking away 'black nail polish' and remaining silent out of fear of ridicule. West warns that this enforced separation and fear of being labeled 'crazy' are tactics used for social control.

West expresses admiration for Steve Jobs but critiques his decision to keep ideas proprietary, noting a disappointment that Jobs's innovations weren't openly shared after his death. In contrast, he praises Elon Musk for his willingness to release ideas and technology to the public, aiming to accelerate human progress. West believes that ideas should be freely accessible to everyone, rather than being selfishly guarded by individuals or corporations.

West acknowledges the shift in the music industry's competitive landscape, influenced by artists like Drake, which led him to reevaluate his pursuit of being the 'number one spot.' He describes a personal transformation from viewing himself as a 'god' or a 'skinhead' fighting for dominance to understanding his role as a 'servant.' This new perspective allows him to leave the 'mountaintop' of competition and focus on using his voice and relationships to contribute to humanity.

Kanye West asserts that many manufactured products lack genuine 'love' and 'inspiration,' being created solely with the intent to sell rather than to uplift. He recounts an experience with his daughter, highlighting the pure joy she found in specific, thoughtfully chosen gifts, contrasting this with the fleeting happiness offered by mass consumerism. This distinction emphasizes the value of emotional connection and purpose in creation over mere commercial viability.

West argues that society is constantly subjected to a commercialized concept of joy, heavily influenced by advertising and branding, which promotes material possessions as sources of happiness. He firmly states that time is the only true luxury, distinguishing it as the sole irreplaceable resource that cannot be recovered once lost. He illustrates this by contrasting the loss of material items, like luggage, with the irreversible loss of time.

However, West suggests that this belief is a fallacy, and true satisfaction is not found in possessions.

Kanye West identifies various social constructs that maintain division in society, including race, gender, religion, and age. Among these, he singles out class as his "favorite thing to hate," highlighting its potent role in separating people. West implies that individuals are often taught to focus on these divisions, making them more susceptible to control.

Kanye West emphasizes that individual success is incomplete if others are suffering, illustrating this with the idea that one's daughter can only truly do well if another's daughter is also doing well. He promotes a vision of society as a unified family rather than a collection of competitors. West suggests that humanity faces a fundamental choice: to pursue collaborative survival or succumb to destructive conflict.

Kanye West notes that current generations are less directly affected by overt racism compared to previous eras, pointing to historical progress like the Obama presidency as a sign of change. However, he asserts that systemic teaching continues to reinforce divisions, particularly those based on class, especially in regions like the UK. West highlights that while racial issues may seem to recede, class divisions persist as a significant societal barrier.

Kanye West identifies his ego as one of his biggest challenges, but he expresses hope that if he, Kanye West, can overcome it, then anything is possible. He recalls the creation of 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' as a highly collaborative effort, noting that Nicki Minaj's contribution even surpassed his own in a particular moment, which he found essential. West believes that removing personal ego from the creative process allows for the "best idea" to emerge and triumph.

He highlights the value of bringing together creative, strong-willed individuals, whom he calls 'egomaniacs,' to collaborate towards a unified vision. For West, prioritizing the optimal lighting, staging, and directorial input, rather than personal pride, is crucial for achieving the best results.

Kanye West describes his creative process as delivering a continuous stream of innovative ideas and moments, often with intense passion. He acknowledges his reputation as someone who might 'scream' to ensure his vision is fully realized. This intensity, he suggests, stems from his unwavering commitment to creative excellence and his drive to achieve his artistic goals.

Kanye West re-emphasizes his stance that his so-called 'bad reputation' is actually a positive attribute, asserting it's the "best reputation in the building." He argues that society pressures individuals to conceal their true identities and ideas, comparing it to hiding 'black nail polish' in pockets and sitting silently. West rejects the fear of being labeled 'crazy' and instead embraces fighting for his vision, viewing silence as a form of submission.

Kanye West humbly admits that he doesn't consider himself as intelligent as either of his parents, both of whom were educators with PhDs. He highlights his father's humanitarian work, which included projects focused on clean water and building community centers. West also mentions that his father attempted to start a computer company even before the rise of Steve Jobs, indicating a lineage of innovation and community-mindedness.

West believes this commodification makes beauty an exclusive rather than an inherent or widely available experience.

He suggests that such high prices are misallocated and instead proposes that a car, a significant functional item, should cost $5,000. West believes that top-tier engineering talent should focus on developing affordable and accessible vehicles for everyone, rather than luxury items.

He questions the inherent value of exclusive goods or experiences in a society plagued by inequality, asking, "What good is anything that everyone can't have?" West emphasizes that while racism is often discussed, other forms of division like elitism, separatism, and classism remain prevalent and equally problematic.
