Philippines Tests New Warship in Pacific Exercise

The Philippines dispatched one of its most capable warships, the guided missile frigate BRP Miguel Malvar, across the Pacific to participate in RIMPAC 2026. This deployment aimed to put the vessel through a demanding test, training with some of the world's most advanced naval forces. The BRP Miguel Malvar departed Subic on June 4th as part of Task Group 84, underscoring the nation's commitment to testing its readiness in complex, multinational wartime scenarios.

Vice Admiral Jose Ma. Ambrosio Espeleta highlighted that the Philippines' return to this multinational activity signifies its dedication to becoming a credible partner under the Sail Plan 2040 vision. This marks the country's first active participation in RIMPAC since 2020. The contingent included a full complement of Philippine Navy sailors and marines, ready to engage in advanced maritime exercises.

Commissioned in May 2025, the BRP Miguel Malvar is a significant addition to the Philippine Navy fleet. It is part of the first Philippine Navy ship class to be equipped with a 16-cell vertical launch system, specifically designed for surface-to-air missiles. This feature substantially enhances the service's capability to respond to aerial threats, alongside its 76-mm Oto Melara gun and anti-submarine torpedoes, making it a formidable asset in modern naval warfare.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. played a pivotal role in the commissioning of the BRP Miguel Malvar in 2025, emphasizing its importance for national defense. He firmly stated the government's resolve, asserting that the country would "not surrender anything" and "not abandon anyone." This modernization effort is directly linked to the defense of Philippine sovereignty, particularly in contested waters.

This marked the Coast Guard's first active involvement in the exercise, moving beyond its previous role as an observer. Their participation underscores a broader strategy of inter-agency cooperation in maritime security.

RIMPAC 2026 showcased an impressive scale of international cooperation, with the final US Navy count indicating participation from 30 nations. The exercise involved 30 surface ships, five submarines, over 197 aircraft, and more than 30,000 personnel. This massive assembly demonstrated the collective commitment of global naval forces to interoperability and maritime security.

A critical aspect of the RIMPAC exercise involved replenishment at sea training, conducted on July 11th with the USNS Guadalupe. This vital skill ensures that warships can maintain distant operations for extended periods by safely receiving fuel and supplies while underway. The meticulous coordination required for such maneuvers is paramount for sustained long-range deployments and naval presence.

The exercises tested the ability of different navies to integrate their command structures and maintain a common defensive picture without disrupting the wider force, utilizing assets like F-35s and other aircraft to simulate threats.

The exercise featured an extensive schedule of over 500 training events and 2,400 aircraft sorties conducted over five weeks. Participating forces executed diverse drills, including anti-submarine warfare, strike operations, and integrated air defense, demanding peak performance and seamless coordination from all involved.

The BRP Miguel Malvar achieved an impressive third-place finish in the highly competitive Naval Surface Fire Support (NSFS) multinational live-fire event. On July 14, the ship fired five salvos from its 76-mm gun at a target located 3.5 miles away, showcasing the professionalism and competency of its personnel. This achievement is particularly notable for a vessel commissioned only one year prior, following the success of the BRP Antonio Luna which also placed third in 2022.

While RIMPAC 2026 included high-profile sinking exercises (SINKEX) involving the USS Mobile Bay and USS Peleliu, the BRP Miguel Malvar did not participate in these events. The Philippines' deployment focused primarily on building operational proficiency and enhancing interoperability with international partners. The emphasis was on defensive capabilities and multinational coordination rather than demonstrating offensive long-range strike power.

Chinese Coast Guard presence at Scarborough Shoal intensified, accumulating 933 ship days in the first half of 2026. Chinese military activity reached a peak in May, including notable displays of force near Second Thomas Shoal on August 1st, underscoring the persistent challenges to Philippine maritime sovereignty.

These new vessels will be based on the successful Miguel Malvar design, ensuring standardization of the fleet's capabilities and streamlining maintenance and operations. This ongoing modernization effort coincides with recent leadership changes, including General Antonio Nafarette taking over as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, signaling a renewed focus on national defense capabilities.
