Air Force Highlights Valor, Innovation in 'Epic Fury'

Over the campaign, approximately 500 aircraft executed 10,000 sorties, maintaining an average of over 250 missions per day.

Airmen demonstrated exceptional resilience and readiness, navigating 1,200 'alarm reds'—critical threat alerts—and performing 48 rapid airfield repairs to sustain operations. Additionally, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians completed 420 disposal missions, directly contributing to the safety and continuity of combat efforts.

He ensured the safety of a younger airman by directing him to a bunker, while Garrett remained on the flight line.

Despite lacking formal training for such procedures, Garrett proceeded to arm weapons and clear jets, ultimately staying until the last fighter aircraft had successfully launched under duress.

During an attack on the base, they tracked the incoming enemy drones, displaying remarkable composure and skill.

Their rapid identification of threats and effective use of countermeasures resulted in over 10 surface-to-air kills. General Wilsbach emphasized that their actions exemplified true courage, defining it not as the absence of fear but as the ability to overcome it in critical moments.

These initiatives aim to enhance base protection and operational resilience against evolving threats.

A new point defense weapon system is being developed, designed to integrate both kinetic and non-kinetic capabilities for comprehensive threat neutralization. Concurrently, a dedicated career field for point defense airmen is being established, anticipated to be fully operational within two years under the management of Andrew Lewis and Brandon Spears.

This strategic shift requires airmen to be prepared for immediate action, often with little to no notice.

During Operation Epic Fury, bomber crews demonstrated this endurance by executing sorties that lasted over 30 hours, showcasing their sustained operational readiness. Technical Sergeant Colin's experience further illustrates the reality of sudden, short-notice deployments to global theaters, highlighting the service's demand for airmen capable of fighting from the very outset of a conflict.

This effort included the construction of more than 1,700 2,000-pound weapons, crucial for sustained combat power.

Additionally, airmen assembled over 600 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles (JASMs). This large-scale weapon assembly supported the largest contingency bomber force deployed in decades, highlighting the logistical and technical proficiency of the Air Force's personnel.

The challenging maneuver occurred when he experienced high-pressure jet fuel spray across his windscreen.

Under these extreme circumstances, Rocket described the refueling process as literally 'refueling by braille,' relying entirely on precise guidance from the tanker crew. This heroic effort was one of eight aerial refuelings required to sustain his lengthy mission.

Their efforts were critical in sustaining the widespread combat activities.

Specifically, over 70 million pounds of fuel and 16 million pounds of cargo were offloaded by these airmen. This massive movement of resources underscored the vital role of global mobility in supporting continuous and diverse operational needs.

For nine months, Peter had been deployed in the Middle East, engaged in the demanding task of moving heavy ordnance.

When his living quarters were hit and destroyed by enemy fire, Peter’s immediate response was to state that his possessions were replaceable, but the mission was not. This sentiment highlights the profound commitment of airmen to their duties above personal loss.

This effort was vital in managing complex and dynamic combat environments.

Over 4,000 dynamic targets were successfully found, identified, validated, and engaged through these advanced intelligence operations. Furthermore, tanker operations maintained 38 consecutive days of missions with zero missed rendezvous, showcasing exceptional operational precision and logistical resilience.

These unmanned aircraft offered real-time intelligence that was instrumental in operational decision-making.

First Lieutenant Suit, flying an MQ-9, used its advanced sensors to inspect runway damage following a missile attack on the airfield, demonstrating its versatile utility. Across the campaign, MQ-9s struck a total of 860 targets, providing a crucial edge to forces and denying the enemy freedom of movement.

The goal is to achieve similar operational effects with improved resilience and at a reduced cost.

This initiative emphasizes rapid movement and substantial investment in new technology to ensure future airpower capabilities meet evolving combat requirements. The MMA concept aims to provide a capable follow-on aircraft that significantly advances operational effectiveness.

Beyond individual resilience, the Air Force is mandating a shift towards comprehensive integration across all domains to secure victory in modern warfare. General Wilsbach highlighted that fighters, bombers, tankers, ISR platforms, cyber, space, and rescue forces become significantly more effective when seamlessly integrated across time, distance, and domain.

This imperative to connect air, space, and cyber forces demands airmen who possess a holistic understanding of the entire battlefield context and can operate effectively under extreme pressure. The transition from mere resilience to active, synchronized integration is critical for future operational success.

Her leadership was essential in coordinating diverse forces under severe threats.

The mission confronted over 1,000 one-way attack drones and 1,200 ballistic missile threats, necessitating precise and agile command. Peaches' role involved a psychological shift from merely tracking symbols to recognizing the profound human and operational reality behind each threat, underscoring the intensity of the operational environment.

This complex operation showcased extraordinary coordination and integration of various air assets.

Peaches was among the many individuals who coordinated this massive effort, leading her team to integrate 176 aircraft, including fighters, bombers, tankers, intelligence platforms, and Air Force special operations command forces. These diverse assets converged on a single objective: bringing the isolated Americans home, demonstrating successful synchronization of varying speeds, fuel states, and weapon systems.

This cultural imperative ensures the recovery of all trapped personnel, regardless of circumstances.

In recognition of their exceptional valor and dedication during the rescue mission, 10 airmen received battlefield promotions. The success of this complex operation relied heavily on cross-functional dependency and the profound trust shared among all participating units.

General Wilsbach recounted several key examples that underscore this point.

These include Staff Sgt. Garrett's courageous act of getting an F-15 airborne under fire, Chenet and Nolan's critical defense against drone swarms that highlighted the need for enduring point defense, and the sustained combat power provided by individuals like Colin, Rocket, Peter, and Suit through their specific operational roles.

General Wilsbach noted that while uniforms and technology have changed significantly over time, the fundamental qualities expected of those who serve have remained constant: courage, ingenuity, and discipline. These foundational traits continue to define the Air Force's strength and resilience.
