The Cintamani Stone Is Not From Space, but Obsidian From Indonesia

In Hindu scripture, the Cintamani is described as a wish-fulfilling stone and is among the rarest things a person can get hold of. A 16th-century religious text goes as far as saying that Cintamani stones are more valuable than gold. Yet these days, according to the host, a Cintamani stone can be bought with a few clicks and a credit card.

Gemstone sellers today often market these rocks as tektites, which the host describes as a kind of glass created by meteorites when they hit the Earth. The host states that, in reality, these stones are neither magical nor of extraterrestrial origin, though they do hold secrets about the Earth's history.

According to both Hindu and Buddhist scripture and art, the Cintamani is a magical jewel that can fulfill one's every desire. It is often depicted in the hands of the buddhas and bodhisattvas, where it serves as a symbol of the divine aid they offer to their followers.

The stone also appears on the back of the wind horse, which is portrayed on Tibetan prayer flags, and on the state emblem of Mongolia.

In Tibetan Buddhism, the Cintamani stone is considered to be one of four relics that fell in chests from the sky during the 5th century, bringing Buddhist teachings to the area.

In the early 20th century, the legend of the Cintamani stone was transformed from a celestial symbol into a tangible object by a new philosophical movement called theosophy. Founded in New York City in 1875, theosophy fused ancient Eastern religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism with Western ideas of spiritualism and mysticism.

In the 1920s, a prominent theosophist described the Cintamani stone as a dark, glassy stone that fell from the sky, delivered to Earth from the star Sirius to guide spiritual evolution on the planet. He noted that the Cintamani stone was similar to a green rock known as moldavite, which is a type of tektite.

Tektites had been known for centuries. Chinese scholars first described them as 'inkstones from the thundergods', noting their glassy luster and the ringing sound they made when struck. In the 18th century they were all the rage in scientific literature, and Charles Darwin studied them.

At the time, these Western scholars thought the stones were made of obsidian and were volcanic in origin. The host notes that this detail matters because it becomes an important part of the story.

It was only later, in the 1900s, that an extraterrestrial origin was suggested for these rocks, and they were given the name tektite, meaning melted. A meteorite strike can generate so much force that it instantly melts both itself and the ground it lands on. Droplets of this mixed molten material fly through the air, sometimes over thousands of square kilometers. Small droplets freeze into aerodynamic shapes as they travel, while larger chunks cool more slowly as slumpy pieces on the ground.

The result is a glassy, dark-colored lump with surface textures shaped during atmospheric flight and later weathering. Because each meteorite strike occurs in a unique location and geology, the composition of the resulting tektites differs too. Darwin Glass is found in Australia, and the moldavites compared to Cintamani stones are tektites from the Czech Republic. American examples, called Bediasites and Georgiaites, formed when an impactor crashed into what is now the Chesapeake Bay about 35 million years ago. Their chemical makeups differ, but all have a glassy interior and a dark, crusty exterior.

Especially in the last few decades, stones with this characteristic tektite-like appearance have appeared on the gem market, often described as Cintamani stones. Because of their supposed mythical links and extraterrestrial origins, they often command high prices.

Chemically, rocks sold as Cintamani stones are most often either Agni Manitites from Indonesia or Saffordite from Arizona. The host says neither is actually a tektite. They have the look, with pitted exteriors and glassy, translucent insides, but the similarities fall apart under lab equipment and analytical tests.

Real tektites contain a silica mineral called lechatelierite, which forms only at temperatures above about 1700 degrees Celsius, as in a hypervelocity impact. Cintamani stones do not have it. Real tektites have an extremely low water content, less than 0.02%, because the impact vaporized the water. Cintamani stones can have a water content close to 1%, enough that heating one with a blowtorch makes it bubble and froth.

Real tektites take a range of shapes, including teardrops, discs and dumbbells, due to their ballistic flight through the air. Cintamani stones appear only as simple rounded pebbles. Real tektites are yellow-greenish inside because of reduced iron formed by extremely high-temperature chemical reactions. Cintamani stones show grey, brown and lavender hues, with more typical iron oxide minerals inside.

Since Cintamani stones lack the characteristic chemistry and morphology of tektites, the host says these stones are not extraterrestrial at all. The host adds that nobody would blame a viewer for being fooled. Some geologists even call them pseudo-tektites.

As it turns out, Cintamani stones are something much more earthly: obsidian. This is exactly what the early scientists mentioned earlier thought tektites were, so the confusion goes both ways. The host acknowledges that anyone expecting a spiritually significant meteorite-derived rock will find this disappointing, but adds that this kind of obsidian is impressive in its own right.

Obsidian starts as felsic magma, a molten rock mixture rich in lighter elements from the Earth's crust, such as silica, aluminum, sodium and potassium. The high silica content makes this liquid thick and sticky. When it erupts as lava at the surface, it does not flow like rivers, unlike the basaltic lava seen coming out of Iceland's volcanoes. Instead, it oozes out more slowly.

The lava's high viscosity also affects how it cools and crystallizes. Atoms have trouble migrating through the liquid, which greatly slows the process of crystals nucleating and growing. The result is the signature amorphous, glassy structure of Cintamani stones. The host notes that scientists are still learning how these rocks form.

Researchers used to think obsidian's glass could form only if the lava cooled very quickly, quenched by contact with cold air or water. The host compares this to the way Minecraft players gather raw materials for a nether portal. But new research in 2026 suggests that, to get a uniform glass without gas bubbles, cooling actually takes place over several days, or even months to decades.

The host describes the rock as a delicate balance of timing: cooling must be quick enough to stop the formation of crystals, but slow enough to let the bubbles disappear.

Cintamani stones of the Agni Manitite variety come from Indonesia, where there is no shortage of obsidian thanks to tectonic activity along the Sunda Volcanic Arc. The Indo-Australian tectonic plate is moving northward and subducting beneath the Eurasian plate in Southeast Asia. When water is added to the mix, it lowers the melting point of the mantle, causing it to melt and create magma that rises and pools beneath the surface.

The crust beneath Java and Sumatra is up to 30 km thick in some places, which means the magma must travel through a lot of rock to reach the surface. On this slow journey, it has many opportunities to become the thick, sticky, silica-rich magma that has been erupting across Sumatra and Java for millennia.

The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa was one such sticky volcanic explosion, creating the loudest sound in recorded history, which was heard nearly 5,000 km away. About 74,000 years ago, the Toba supereruption explosively discharged nearly 3,000 cubic kilometers of material, contributing to the world's largest volcanic caldera in recent geological times.

Even before this eruption, the volcanic system had been emitting silica-rich material for more than a million years, seeding the Indonesian mountains with plenty of obsidian. That obsidian is normally found as black, glassy layers sandwiched among other volcanic rocks.

To make volcanic glass round and pitted enough to look like a tektite, a second, crucial stage is needed: exposure. Over time, the volcanic glass erodes out of the layered rocks where it was deposited, tumbles down hillsides, and is swept away by streams and rivers. Rocks can spend thousands of years in this nomadic phase, during which several processes act together to change the obsidian's appearance.

Bumpy transport over the surface and through rivers smooths a jagged chunk into a rounded pebble. Chemical reactions that occur while the pebbles are in contact with air and water create a darkened, pitted crust. In Java and Sumatra, the warm tropical location and acidic groundwaters create ideal conditions for fast and effective weathering. The host calls this essentially a Cintamani stone nursery. The result can look and seem like a tektite without any extraterrestrial material involved. The host adds that the formation of these pseudo-tektite pebbles is also a transient process.

In geology, too much exposure is almost always bad news. If obsidian is left out in the open too long, water can seep into its structure and break the glass down into a combination of quartz, feldspar and clay. For this reason, the Cintamani stones you can hold today all formed at some point in the last 20 million years. Any earlier, and these wishing stones would have been reduced to mush.

The host concludes that although these stones may not have come from beyond the stars or even beyond Earth's atmosphere, they are still precious. The video then closes with a promotion for Rocks Box, a subscription that delivers a geological sample to members twelve times a year, along with individually sold minerals and merchandise.
