Iran Warns Amid Hormuz Deployment Pressure

The United States is pressuring South Korea to deploy troops to the Strait of Hormuz. In response, Iran has publicly warned that if South Korea participates in military operations, it would have serious consequences.

This, coupled with the tense situation in the Middle East, further complicates South Korea's diplomatic position.

Opponents of deployment to the Strait of Hormuz raise concerns about joining an American war of aggression. However, a counter-argument suggests that deployment is not a choice between the U.S. and Iran, but a matter of survival for South Korea, protecting a key economic artery.

The Strait of Hormuz is where 90% of South Korea's energy shipments pass through, directly linking to the energy security of the South Korean economy, which relies heavily on the Middle East. Deployment is discussed as an issue that should be approached from the perspective of upholding universal freedom of navigation for energy security.

The past incident where the South Korean flagged vessel 'Korea Arc' was attacked by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz is being re-examined. At the time, South Korean crew members were nearly endangered by a clear Iranian attack.

The lukewarm response from South Korean diplomatic authorities after the incident was criticized. This event raises the necessity of principled deployment to protect national interests.

The importance of U.S.-South Korea relations far outweighs that of South Korea-Iran relations. During former President Trump's tenure, criticism arose that South Korea's lukewarm stance on deployment negatively impacted U.S.-South Korea relations.

Regret remains that missing the appropriate timing for deployment diminished its diplomatic effectiveness. Analysis suggests that timely deployment could have contributed to strengthening the U.S.-South Korea alliance.

Major oil-producing countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), are discussing ways to expand crude oil reserves with South Korea.

This could serve as a positive opportunity for South Korea to secure a stable energy supply. It lays the groundwork for establishing new diplomatic cooperation to enhance energy supply stability.

South Korea is expected to strengthen energy security through strategic cooperation with Middle Eastern oil-producing countries and seek mutually beneficial relationships.
