Korean Manufacturing to Widen Gap with China Through AI Native Factories

CEO Yoon Byung-dong revealed that he ventured into entrepreneurship driven by a desire to measure his social value beyond academic metrics. He aimed to build and operate a company using his technological assets and gain recognition for their value in the process. This challenge reflects his commitment to contributing to society beyond personal achievement.

"I wanted to have my social value as Yoon Byung-dong evaluated. I thought about building and operating a company by utilizing the technological assets I possess," said Yoon, explaining the background of his entrepreneurship.

CEO Yoon Byung-dong explained that his dual life as a scholar and entrepreneur, while busy, also offers him invaluable gifts. Directly confronting complex, unresolved problems in industrial sites, he realizes that he still has much to learn. These experiences provide practical insights that go beyond the limitations of academic research.

He added that performing these dual roles has broadened his worldview. He learned humility through interactions with industry experts and developed the ability to view problems from various perspectives. Yoon stated, "When I listen to and talk with people in industrial sites, I realize that I still have a lot to see and learn. Living this dual life is busy, but it also gives me gifts."

CEO Yoon Byung-dong diagnosed that while Korean manufacturing is not dying, it is clearly in a difficult situation in terms of global competition. He specifically assessed that Korean manufacturing faces a crisis amid China's rapid pursuit and the immense capital and technological power of the United States. As a technological solution, he proposed 'autonomous manufacturing,' emphasizing that competitiveness can be secured through technologies like 'AI Native Factories.'

Yoon stated, "I don't think it's dying. However, it's clear that it's in a difficult situation from a global competitive perspective. Let's build an environment where manufacturing can be done better. I see that as autonomous manufacturing, and I believe there's no reason why we can't win in the competition if we equip ourselves with technologies like AI Native Factories," underscoring the importance of autonomous manufacturing.

CEO Yoon Byung-dong categorized autonomous manufacturing into five stages, explaining the evolution from Stage 1 (information provision) to Stage 5 (complete autonomy). He clearly distinguished that the purpose of a 'smart factory' is 'automation,' while the purpose of an 'AI factory' is 'autonomation.' He emphasized a critical difference: in a smart factory, humans intervene for decision-making at various points, whereas in an AI factory, AI handles those decisions.

Yoon stated, "The purpose of a smart factory is automation, and the purpose of an AI factory is autonomation. In a smart factory, because it's automation, humans intervene in between tasks to make decisions. In contrast, an AI factory is autonomous, so AI also makes those decisions," clarifying that an AI factory goes beyond simple automation to an autonomous agent concept.

CEO Yoon Byung-dong analyzed that Chinese manufacturing is no longer content with quantitative growth but is now transitioning to qualitative growth. He pointed out that China is elevating its manufacturing standards through AI and data-driven technological innovation. As a result of this qualitative growth, China occupies 40% of the world's 'Lighthouse Factories,' which he emphasized is a truly astonishing fact.

'Lighthouse Factories' refer to factories recognized by the World Economic Forum (WEF) for pioneering the adoption of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies. China's high share clearly demonstrates its rapid technological development and investment. Yoon stated, "It's true that China achieved quantitative growth in the past. But China didn't stop there; it's adding qualitative growth. China occupies 40% of the world's Lighthouse Factories. That's a very surprising fact," explaining the current status of Chinese manufacturing.

CEO Yoon Byung-dong argued that Korean manufacturing should no longer target the Chinese supply chain but aim to be number one within the US-centric supply chain system. He revealed that several domestic factories are currently undergoing verification and stabilization of AI Native Factory solutions, striving to secure technological capabilities. This strategic shift is interpreted as an intention to redefine Korea's position amidst the global supply chain realignment.

Once the solutions reach maturity, there are plans to introduce them to overseas factories to strengthen competitiveness in the global market. Yoon stated, "Now, instead of targeting the Chinese supply chain, let's do well within the US supply chain system," proposing a new strategic direction.

CEO Yoon Byung-dong explained that AI Native Factories have a strong advantage in preventing software-based technology leaks, unlike hardware. While hardware can be reverse-engineered to analyze and replicate its internal structure, software is difficult to understand internally, and its operating know-how is complex, making it not easy to imitate. He emphasized that the core of AI Native Factories lies in the irreversible combination of vast manufacturing data, domain knowledge, physical assets, and AI technology, making reverse engineering impossible.

Thanks to these structural characteristics, AI Native Factories can fundamentally prevent the leakage of core technologies, which he stressed would be a crucial factor in protecting the competitiveness of Korean manufacturing. Yoon explained, "Software is not easy. You can't know the internal structure, and there will definitely be various operating know-hows embedded in it. If we move into the software market of AI Native Factories, it's not easy to catch up with the technology," highlighting the importance of software-centric technology protection.

CEO Yoon Byung-dong identified the fundamental reason for the outflow of talented engineering professionals to medical schools or law schools as the 'asymmetrical structure of growth and compensation.' He argued that while engineers continuously grow and develop their capabilities, a lack of commensurate compensation diminishes their motivation. He emphasized that unless compensation proportional to individual growth, like at Samsung Electronics or Hynix, is provided, top talent will not remain in the manufacturing sector.

Yoon advocated for differentiated compensation policies that recognize the capabilities of individual engineers. This means not just salary increases but also fair evaluation of R&D achievements and various forms of compensation, including equity participation. He pointed out, "I see this problem as an issue of an asymmetrical structure between growth and compensation. People grow, but the compensation for it isn't sufficient."

CEO Yoon Byung-dong predicted that the metrics for evaluating a future manufacturing powerhouse would be completely different from the past. He explained that while national competitiveness was previously assessed by physical indicators like population, domestic market size, territory, and GDP, in the future, 'the amount of manufacturing data per unit area' and 'the utilization capability and quality of AI agents' will be key indicators. This implies that digital assets and AI technology will become more important than physical resources.

Yoon analyzed that Korea, with its abundant domain knowledge and high-quality manufacturing data in advanced manufacturing fields like semiconductors, can have strengths in these new indicators. He stated, "In the past, it was about how many skilled technicians a country had; now, I believe it's about how many good AI agents are created and utilized that can explain a nation's competitiveness," emphasizing the fundamental shift in the nature of future competitiveness.

CEO Yoon Byung-dong, who balances being a professor and an entrepreneur, believes that his current busy life leads to personal and company growth. He explained that if he were asked to solve the problems he will face three years from now, he wouldn't be able to, which he sees as proof of his current growth. This growth ultimately contributes to the company's expansion, aligning with his vision to build AI Native Factories as national strategic assets and export them globally. Yoon stated, "If I were to put my future self from three years from now in this moment and ask them to solve problems, I don't think I could have. That means I'm growing that much, and I believe that's leading to the company's growth, so personally, although I'm busy, I don't regret it," explaining his reasons for continuing his challenge.
