Im Jin-taek, President of the Korea Arts and Culture Education Service, illuminated the institution's role and his personal philosophy of art, emphasizing art's positive impact on individuals and communities.
The Korea Arts and Culture Education Service is a public institution under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, celebrating its 21st anniversary. Its main role is to support all citizens in enjoying culture and arts. KACES's role is distinct from the Arts Council Korea, which supports artistic creation.
The 'Dream Art Troupe' project aims to eliminate cultural and artistic blind spots for children. This project focuses on cultivating communal sensibility and cooperation. By adopting Venezuela's El Sistema education system, it was confirmed that art education not only develops an individual's artistic capabilities but also fosters communal sensibility and brightens gloomy childhoods.
In the 1970s, the prevailing stereotype was that plays should only be performed inside theaters. President Im Jin-taek broke this notion, conceiving that plays could also be performed in open spaces. He was the first to introduce the term and concept of 'Madangguk,' which was a new attempt not previously used in actual theater. This created a form of theater that transcended spatial constraints and communicated more closely with the audience.
President Im Jin-taek entered the film industry by appearing as a funeral singer in Jang-ho Lee's 'A Good Day to Have a Blast.' Later, he appeared as Yoo-bong in Im Kwon-taek's 100th film, 'Chunhyang.' He had a special connection with Director Im Kwon-taek, sharing the same clan (Naju Im clan), generation, and family branch.
President Im Jin-taek recalled that while filming 'Chunhyang,' he also served as the general director of the World Culture Expo, participating in the film amidst a busy schedule. However, the film completely failed at the box office, causing Director Im Kwon-taek to fall ill from distress. He expressed his regret as an actor for not meeting the director's expectations.
He is scheduled to perform 'Sorinae-ryeok' at the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History in October. President Im plans to return to being a Pansori singer after completing his term as KACES President.
